Folio Archives 182: Scarlet and Black Wood Engravings Portfolio by Frank Martin 1965

Wood Engravings by Frank Martin for Stendahl’s Scarlet and Black 1965

This is a special edition of the Folio Archives series featuring for the first time an item that I do not own.

FSD member bookfair_e found an Ebay listing for this item, and the pictures are all taken from this listing, but have been edited for this post in Photoshop.

There is only a passing phrase in Folio 60 about this item, and no further information is available other than can be seen in the photos.

The cloth bound portfolio is ribbon tied and contains 13 loose sheets that are prints of the engravings done for the Folio Society edition of Stendahl’s “Scarlet and Black” which was published by the FS in 1965. These artist’s proofs have all been signed in pencil by Frank Martin. They are printed on white hand-made paper, each print being 28x23cm. and limited to 75 sets.

The only other similar portfolio I know of is Dolf Rieser's Copper Engravings Portfolio for Joseph Conrad’s Two Tales of the Congo which was done in 1952 and is featured in the Folio Archives series here.

The portfolio was offered in the April/June 1969 edition of the Folio Quarterly Magazine "A few portfolios of the thirteen engravings are still available at 25 guineas. Orders will be fulfilled in strict rotation."
