I'm going to be going on an airplane for the first time in a couple of months. It will be a five-in-a-half to six-in-a-half hour flight each way. Because it takes so long to get where I'm going, I've considered ways to pass the time. Being an LTer and therefore booklover, I've strongly considered reading. Trouble is, I am not sure if people can feel ill from reading on a plane as they do when reading in a car. Does this happen? I am trying to decide if I need to buy an audio book for the flight.
2foggidawn
I do -- but I don't suffer from motion sickness (I read in the car, too). Planes seem to give less of a sensation of movement than cars, in my experience, but as I said, I'm not really sensitive to it either way.
3Kerian
Hmm. I don't read in cars. When I read on busses, I sometimes start to not feel well after thirty minutes to an hour.
I'm very glad to hear about the sensation of less movement on planes! I wonder if busses are worse than cars and if so I can consider that reading on a plane might not be bad for me...

I usually read on planes and I have to agree that in general planes don't have the same sense of motion. That is as long as you don't have turbulence, then all bets are off. But with as many flights as I've had those are relatively rare. Listening to a book on tape wouldn't be bad either.
5Kerian
Thanks, readafew. :)
This will sound silly, but what is turbulence? Does it have something to do with wind?
Maybe I'll check out prices for audio books at a used book store. I've never bought one but I know new ones seem rather costly.

I get most of my audio books from the library, much cheaper.
turbulence causes the plane to shake or wobble or even rise and fall rapidly like a roller coaster, mostly unpleasant if it continues for more than a couple minutes. (Yes it has to do with the wind.)

Yeah. I just worry about loosing the audio book on the trip and having a great big fine for it. Also I think I'd feel guilty taking one from a library on a trip clear across the country. I'm weird like that. :)
Oh no! I've been suprisingly calm concerning the flight but now that you tell me what turbulence is...*slight panic attack*
Ekkk!
You say turbulence is rare? *crosses her fingers*

Kerian, I can not read in a car, but on a plane, no problem.
And don't worry about turbulence. If you do get it, it won't be for long. They can usually just gain altitude to get above it. The time of year you are going, it shouldn't be a problem.

9readafew
In my experience it has been very rare, out of 80-100 flights I've had 2-3 that had turbulence lasting more than a minute or so and violent enough to be bothersome. about a quarter had some kind but it is usually like a small earthquake, and over before you register what just happened.

#9 Turbulance is usually exactly like an earthquake, I'd never thought of it like that. I always read on the plane in fact...that's how I first read HP. Bring stuff that you've wanted to read for awhile but keep putting off, if it's the only thing around, then you'll read it. That's what I do!
12legallypuzzled
I read a lot of magazines on planes. They have the added benefit of being disposable, so I have more room in my carry-on for purchases as I fly back!

How earthquake experienced are you? :(
You were putting off HP? Tsk! ;)
Hmm. I've actually considered reading a reread on the plane so as to be more relaxed. Comfort book or something familiar, you know?
#12 legallypuzzled:
Thanks! Maybe I'll bring a magazine, too. I have some with short stories - those would be lovely if I can't concentrate on a novel.

Tough call. I find when I reread, my mind is more likely to stray to other things because I already know what's happening, whereas with something new I get caught up in what I'm reading and ignore all else (the flight attendants get somewhat annoyed by this occasionally, can't they see I'm reading? no I don't want your tiny bag of peanuts!)
I am moderately earthquake experienced having lived in CA from 1979(birth)-1982; 1987-1992; and 2005-a month and a half ago.
Yep, I was one of those people who thought it was too popular to be any good. Then I went to a wedding and went through the books I brought on the plane trip there, so I had to borrow what my sister had, PS and Cos (UK versions). I got hooked and immediately borrowed PoA and GoF from work (worked at Waldenbooks then). Then I had to wait for OotP

I didn't think of that. Good point. I'd hate to bring a bunch of books because there will be plenty where I'm going, and I intend to shop, too. Books take up space. *considers her choices and mutters* Maybe two books, the reread choice a slim one? No hardcovers?
I've lived in CA birth to 3 months, then 4 years to current (24). While earthquakes are common enough, they leave me so ansy! One would think I'd be so used to them.
I had thought that, too. I didn't read the first book till spring 2002, them zoomed through the rest and reread them twice that year. I didn't see the first movie till right before the second hit theaters.

Ahh...for me it was summer 2001, so I did see SS when it hit the theaters.
I think two books is probably good. That's what I usually bring...or it would be if I knew it was a real vacation where I would be shopping...I think the last time I actually had one of those was 1995!
Yep, earthquakes leave me antsy too, and that's pretty much what turbulance is like. It's annoying/slash slightly scary for a minute or so, then you're antsy for a while, waiting for it to come back and then eventually you forget about and you're fine again. (A plus of turbulance over earthquakes, there are flight attendants to bring you alcohol if you're too scared!)

Book or two, magazine, ipod, laptop on a long flight (8+ hours). I get motion sickness reading in a car, never on a plane.
I like the book/magazine combo, i read the magazine while waiting for takeoff and after landing, and the book in flight. I love browsing in bookshops at the airport too, so i rarely take more than one book when i pack.

I usually travel alone and almost never check baggage, so I never end up browsing because I don't want to drag my carryons around and I can't just leave them sitting around. But yeah, magazines can be good too. I love to watch the landing but I hate watching take off. I prefer the world getting bigger to getting smaller!

I have a real problem with motion sickness. One reason I teach skiing is it breaks up the chairlift rides. When I "freeski" I can only last an hour or so before the nausea kicks in. Cars are really bad if I am in the back seat for any duration of time.
I don't fly much, but on my last trip I took dramamine just to be safe. I still didn't read on the plane, but I had books and magazines for the layovers. I listened to a comfort book on my ipod when I was on the plane. I noticed a lot of people watching movies on DVD players and laptops, which is one reason I got a new laptop instead of a desktop. Thank good that trip was before I discovered LT. I would have gone crazy not being able to post and then trying to catch up.

Ooo yes. Movies. Do you have a layover? Where? If you get lucky you should have at least one movie on a cross-country flight. I'm not promising it will be good. In the last year I've had Shrek 3, Spiderman 3 and Elizabeth: The Golden Age on various flights.

Yep, they play them if you're flying coach, it just depends on your layover and if you have a long enough flight...oh and your airline. Like Southwest doesn't, but Delta and American do...it depends on a lot actually. Oh and the movies are free, just bring some headphones, otherwise you might have to pay to get airplane ones.
Nope. No internet on airplanes. You can't have your cell phone on at all so be prepared!

Dramamine helps with all motion sickness, but it can make you drowsy. Supposedly there are some patches or bracelets that help, but I have been to afraid to try them. It is very embarrassing to get sick :P and I like to stick with what works.
Do you know what causes motion sickness? Your brain is getting mixed messages. Your inner ear can feel that you are moving, but your eyes sense that you aren't. Maybe that is why flying is better, it is at a constant speed.
A layover is when you have a planned stop or have to change planes. It usually lasts a few hours.

Kerian, they don't let you take anything liquid in containers larger than 3 oz. If you have shampoo, etc., decant it into small bottles. And you have to put all those small bottles into a ziploc bag.

Yes, be sure not to have any firearms in your carryons ;)
Oh, and I highly recommend that you double and triple check any carry on items you have. A couple months ago I forgot I threw in a pencil pouch at the last minute. I forgo that I had two small hand lotion bottles and a big pair of scissors. Luckily, they let it all through, they just warned me about it.
Bring cash too. I don't know about others, but I tend to get pretty hungry on flights. Airport food's pretty expensive.
As for books, something that's easy to read. Tough or slow stuff doesn't seem to hold your attention as well as it would if you were at home in bed. That's just me, I bet everyone's different.

Small straightening iron...I have no idea. I never straighten my hair, so I'd have no idea.
my advice, pack it with anything that's not carryon. Don't take the chance you'll have to through it out. On the other hand, there's the remote chance that your baggage could get lost.

Now I need to tell a pre-9/11 story to Kerian-
We went to Puerto Rico when cat was 1. We wanted to bring our juggling gear to show off for my cousins, but hubby nixed bringing the knives. OK, fine, we didn't bring the knives, no problems heading to the island.
Coming back, however...
When our carry on luggage was being checked I was carrying our prop bag. After I went through security I went to get it. Two guards were looking through my bag. They asked if I had handcuffs. I said yes, we have trick handcuffs because we're performers and I pulled them out and showed how they work.
"Do you work for the government?" the guard asked me.
I was stunned. "Nooo. They're trick handcuffs." A third guard was called over and checked the handcuffs and finally waved me through.
I'm sure if this happened today I would have been strip searched. 8-O

I found that chewing gum helped it be silent. This depends on the flavor, though! Apple is great for that, but anything minty? Not at all.

All is forgiven, you were 1. There are exeptions to almost all rules.

If you get stuck next to the morbidly obese guy, try to ask the attendent for a different seat if the flight's not crowded.
Same thing applies to creepy people that trace patterns in the seat ahead of them.

K, it's fine to trace patterns in a bored kind of way, but this guy was staring wide eyed at the seat and not blinking. And drooling. It was a little scary. I made my dad switch me seats I was so unerved. And I don't get unerved easily (see time when I put guy two years older and 7 inches taller than me in headlock).

I love flying. I hope you have a good time, K! (I know it's not for a while yet, but I thought I'd say that now, while we're talking about it.)

Hey foggi!
You're passed out on a couch on another thread, so I'll say hi now!!
Grrr...dinner won't be ready for 20 minutes. The oven had some food it was burning off, which was why I was smelling food. I'm starting to drool on keyboard...

ooohh, it's raining again! I love that sound of rain on the rooftop. I think I'll go outside after dinner and just get soaked. Has anyone ever done that? Just go outside for the joy of it?

Oh yes! And going outside while it's raining or snowing is so much fun too! So long as you're properly dressed, of course. :)

You know, I'm going to be having the same problem when I go to my friend's wedding in June, so I've decided to bring books that I don't mind leaving there. I'll probably get Bookcrossing # for them, see if they don't get caught up there. That would be neat. I have anaweful tendancy to forget at least one item when packing, so I will not be bringing anything I would prefer to have come back with me. Too much stress when I'll have enough just dealing with the airports.
Where will you be going?

wow, lots of info here :)
first, i have to say that the topic of this post made me think of Green Eggs and Ham - Do you read when on a plane? Do you read when on a train? How about when at the beach? Would you read about a peach? *grin*
I have done a *lot* of flying, most recently last month. my partner's mother also flies weekly and keeps us up to date on all the official TSA stuffs. So, as far as *rules* go:
Carryon: no containers larger than 3oz. That means that your 4 oz bottle that is one quarter - or even one half - empty is NO GOOD. They will let you slide by up to 3.4 oz, but only if you get a forgiving soul. You'll be surprised, though; a lot of lotions, creams, etc are within the legal limit. it's actual fluids that will get ya every time.
All of your liquid, lotion, gel, etc. items that are under 3oz must fit in a single one quart size ziploc baggie. if you do not have one, they will usually provide one. keep the baggie outside of your actual carryon bag when passing through security.
SECURITY: wear easy-on-easy-off shoes, and as few accessories as possible. when you're in line, take off shoes, belts, jewelry, empty pockets, and take off any coat, jacket, hoodie, sweater, or other layer on top of your bra and base shirt. hold onto your photo ID and boarding pass; do not pass them through the scanner with your bag and wearables.
SURPRISE LIQUIDS: items that you might not think about being fluid but that might set off their sensors are mascara, gel eyeliner, foundation, cream eye shadows, gum, ink pens, etc. The general rule is that if you tilt the container and it slides, it's a liquid, but i say if it can melt into liquid form on a hot day, put it in your baggie or check it.
GETTING SICK. Almost everyone does after flying, and most people think it's because you're trapped with all kinds of people and someone had a cold. not usually so. it's because the humidity on a plane is less than HALF of what your body is accustomed to. Solution: nasal spray. use a plain saline nasal spray (most bottles are fewer than 3oz) before the plane takes off, every time your mouth or nose feels dry, or at least every two hours during and directly after your flight. this will keep your nasal passages from drying out, cracking, and inflaming, which is what causes most post-flight illness.
ummmm, ok, i'm out of steam, haha... as far as reading goes, yes i do. usually my carryon is backbreakingly heavy because i have at least four or five options - novels, magazines, a non-fiction i've been meaning to sit down with... i also bring at least one pair of underwear, one t-shirt, and a couple of favorite snacks - plane snacks are horrible, especially when you see the saaaaaame onnnnnnnnes alllllllll the tiiiiiiiiiiiiime!
hope that helps!

LOL! Dr Seuss. :)
Someone from work told me they charge $0.10 for the quart sized bag they provide you with.
Do you know if shower gel is safe to bring in baggage?
I was thinking of wearing one of my pairs of slip on Sketcher shoes.
No mascara or foundation?!?! *tear* I wear a lot of make-up. They seriously can't be brought with carryon?! Or wait, do you mean just put them in the ziplock bag and it will be okay?
Gum? But I thought everyone takes gum with them...?
Ewww, nasal spray. *covers her nose* Do those burn? ... I was planning on taking airborn before and after the flight to and from. Guess that's not enough? :(
We can bring our own food with us on planes? Yey! :)
Your post helped tons! Thanks a bunch! :)

easiest way to reply will be to quote your part and answer below, so that's what i'll do :)
>>Someone from work told me they charge $0.10 for the quart sized bag they provide you with.
that could be. i've never *not* brought one, so i'm not sure. but you sound like you want to be as prepared as possible, so i'm sure you'll have yours :)
>>Do you know if shower gel is safe to bring in baggage?
do you mean checked (in the cargo hold) or carry-on (with you)? either way, the answer is yes, but if it's carry-on, it has to be a container that holds 3oz or less. you can go to most drug stores, target, etc. and get those little travel size bottles and fill them with your preferred brand if your regular bottle is too big - you can even have four or five 3oz bottles of it as long as it *all fits in the baggie together* :)
tip: when i check fluids, i generally put them in ziploc baggies, too. the change in air pressure can mess with containers and some don't hold up well. i've never had a major issue, but it's safe practice to baggie everything. use freezer baggies; they seal the best.
>>I was thinking of wearing one of my pairs of slip on Sketcher shoes.
Perfect :)
>>No mascara or foundation?!?! *tear* I wear a lot of make-up. They seriously can't be brought with carryon?! Or wait, do you mean just put them in the ziplock bag and it will be okay?
Gum? But I thought everyone takes gum with them...?
all of the above: yes you can carry them on, just put them in your baggie to be on the safe side. just so you know too, if you do have something in your carry-on that's liquid but isn't in your baggie, if they search your bag and find it, as long as the container is TSA-OK size ( under 3oz) and it will fit in the baggie, they'll let you keep it. they just have their boss inspect it first. and that's only at the strictest checkpoints.
>>Ewww, nasal spray. *covers her nose* Do those burn? ... I was planning on taking airborn before and after the flight to and from. Guess that's not enough? :(
i used to feel the same way about nasal spray, but i got tired of getting sick on planes. i've used it for three years of flights now and have yet to get sick afterwards when i used to every stinking time.
you're in the bay area, right? go get this: http://www.walgreens.com/store/product.jsp?CATID=100095&navAction=jump&n....
It's just a moisturizer - mainly water. you don't want Afrin/Anefrin or anything medicated. just the most basic saline spray. it's hardly noticeable, i promise.
>>We can bring our own food with us on planes? Yey! :)
Yup! I usually bring some m&ms or other chocolate and then something i can nibble on mindlessly throughout the flight without feeling sick from the sugar or too full - twizzlers are a favorite of mine :)

things I put in my carry-on (note that I haven't flown since the liquid ban, so I don't know the ins and outs of that):
extra clothes in case my luggage is delayed or lost
small containers of shampoo etc. for the same reason (I put the main containers in the stuff that is going to be checked. put all liquids in a sealed plastic bag, because if you don't they will leak. each in it's own plastic bag works best, so if one leaks you don't have to clean all the others.)
snacks
(if not for the liquids ban I would say a bottle of water, but I don't think they let you bring one anymore)
gum
reading material and other stuff to do
anything that I won't be able to live without for a day or two. (luggage mishaps do happen enough that you should be prepared just in case. usually you get your suitcase back the next day, but every once in a while they can't find someone's stuff for a while)
anything that is very breakable (they aren't very careful with the checked baggage, it gets shaken a lot)
money to get food or a water bottle in the airport. (I would suggest that you don't put any cash in your checked baggage)
state issued ID (you will need it to go through security and to board the plane)
I usually pack a backpack as my carry-on, because it will fit under the seat. anything that can't fit under the seat has to be put in the overhead compartment, and then you can't get to it.
things you shouldn't have in your carry-on
scissors
razor (I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty sure they won't let you have one in your carry-on)
nail file
screw driver
knife
anything that you think might be used as a weapon, or that someone could make a weapon out of.

Rissa, I'm eating fishies right now. (!) I should bring some to snack on for the plane. :)
Good idea about the shampoo - I didn't think of that.
The website that aglaia linked says food and beverages purchased past the checking point may be brought on board planes.
I'm glad you mentioned the better use of a backpack for carry-on! Thanks! :)

57 unread posts?! wth?! I wanted to say remember, if you somehow miss something and it gets thrown away, you will probably be able to replace it at the airport itself, though that will be expensive, but they pretty much have everything...including gum, batteries, snacks, nasal spray, drinks, etc. so it's not the end of the world if you do forget something...just the end of your bank account!
Also, if you're flying non-stop on Jet Blue then definitely bring headphones, because you should get at least one movie, maybe two and probably some t.v. shows or something.
Okay, I tried to bold the word "definitely" and it didn't work.

#89 if they're letting you bring on drinks purchased past the check point, I would definitely get a water bottle as soon as you're through. they do give you drinks once you have finished taking off, but you always have to be there quite a while before you board and I always finish the water they give me on long flights.
oh, and plane bathrooms aren't always that bad, so if you really have to go, do it. all they same I suggest going in the airport before you board.

A few other thoughts:
Bring gum. (I know it's been mentioned, but it's vital.)
Bring a snack. They used to feed you, but now you're lucky if you get a small bag of pretzels.
Don't be alarmed at the 5-foot-tall girl carrying an M16 bigger than she is--she's there for YOUR protection. (Personally, I feel so much less secure with all those guns around.)
Wear comfortable everything. And slipoff shoes.
I wish I was coming with you, but you can do it on your own. Go, Kerian!

Things I or hubby have been stopped for at checkin, and had confiscated:
Scissors (several)
Knitting needles
World's smallest pocket knife
Nail file
Legos (This was my husband when he flew to Ireland many years ago. They thought it could be plastic explosives. The story of how he was treated before they opened the luggage (and after) is totally hilarious!)

You will have control of an air vent above you, I always turn it off. It's too cold and adds to the dry air feeling that makes you sick.
Also, a very specialized note, I flew with a wrist brace on a few years ago and got stopped because of the metal bracings in it. They stopped just short of calling my doctor!

Thanks for the warning. I hate going somewhere that people have weapons! You should have seen me the first time I went to -hmm, what was it called - well, where you pay traffic tickets, and such. It was two to four years ago. The metal detector went off on me, and a guy stuck a gun at me. He starting yelling at me, demanding I be still and raise my pant legs (he saw my Chesire cat socks, hehe). I was so freaked out, the jerk had me crying for a while.
Thanks for the advice! Wish you were coming, too!

What? I don't understand - these things, with some fine details, were listed as allowed for your luggage!

He starting yelling at me, demanding I be still and raise my pant legs (he saw my Chesire cat socks, hehe). I was so freaked out, the jerk had me crying for a while.
Thanks for the advice! Wish you were coming, too!
#99 LG:
What? I don't understand - these things, with some fine details, were listed as allowed for your luggage!
103littlegeek
They have put and taken various things on the confiscate list over the last several years. You should check the latest list of what's not allowed. It also varies with airports. Stuff that Newark didn't notice was taken by San Jose, etc.

I'm going to. I want to wear jeans. :)

Thanks! It probably adds to nose discomfort, too.
Wow. I love bracelets, but don't really own any so it should be okay. What I would dislike is I feel so anxious when out and not wearing a watch, necklace, and earrings - such a norm for me. I think I will pack all away but a watch, though.

you will have to take off your watch and any jewlery and put them through the x-ray machine when you go through security.
107Kerian
Yep. I've done that before, back when you could walk with people to where they board their plane.
108littlegeek
Yes, Newark, NJ. I know you have already purchased tickets but I recommend that as the best NYC airport. Next would be Kennedy. Whatever you do, do not fly into La Guardia.
109Kerian
Ummm. No. I've viewed my options for tickets and have the money for them, but I need to purchase them. Within the next few days. I was told to go to JFK.
110jugglingpaynes
#108 - I second that. My worst flights came in and out of LaGuardia. *crosses fingers that K is not coming into LaGuardia*
The airport is way too small, the runways are too small. I'm amazed it's still used as much as it is.

Suge said to come to JFK and that's what I'm going to do. She will be meeting me there, with a bagel and cream cheese, unless that part was a joke that I just killed. ;)
Going back to post #103, I think the San Jose airport sucks. We always get lost there and are never quite sure where to be. I'm leaving from Oakland.

Oakland to JFK is a good flight, Kerian, that will be righton.
I used to mostly go straight upstate so Newark is easier. JFK is good, it's just monstrously large and can be confusing, but if suge is meeting you there, no prob.

I didn't want to make any stops on my first time on a plane - didn't want the ...confusion. Oh, dear. JKF is huge and confusing? I think I would like suge to show me a picture before I go - I should know what the person I'm looking for looks like. Maybe I'll take a picture of my bag that I'll use for carryon! My backpack is super distinctive.

getting out of an airport usually isn't that bad (I don't know how confusing JFK is). follow the signs for baggage claim, and they will take you to the security check point. That's usually the easiest place to meet someone.
116jugglingpaynes
#113 - suge hasn't shown you a picture? Email me, I'll send you a picture! :o)
And in suge's defense, it would probably help if she knows what you look like.
Maybe you could both wear wizard hats. How many people would be wearing wizard hats in JFK at this time of year?

LOL! Wizard hats! You are too funny, jp. :)
Hmm, you know what would be cool? Getting a LibraryThing t-shirt to wear on the plane or a LT bag so she can see and know who I am easier. There is a link to a place that sells them somewhere on LT! :)

Carry a couple of dead flowers with you, K. If anybody tries to bother you in the airport, offer them a dead flower and ask if they've been saved. They'll run the other way.
General advice: expect a slight delay or some sort of hassle. I've had some sort of minor problem every time I've flown lately, but nothing terrible. You don't have to worry about a connecting flight, so if you end up a little late, it should be no big deal. Assuming you have a book or two, that is! Bringing an extra book actually helps prevent delays. Don't believe me? Think back to all those times you prevented rain by bringing your umbrella!

I actully haven't had any problems with delays in a few years...but then I generally have about 4 books on me.

I had a delay one time because one of the seat cushions was missing, on and empty seat. I think we took of an hour late and missed our connecting flight. stuck in Minneapolis for six hours. so we went to the mall of America and rode the roller coasters.
124biblioholic29
I had a delay once (awhile ago) because the kitchen wasn't working, so they couldn't heat the food...post 9/11...on a 45 minute flight....where we got pretzels...the kind in a bag!

126rissa
#125 re 123, it's a safety issue apparently, the seat cushions "can be used as floatation device"
127Kerian
Hmm. I wonder what they mean by that? Do the cushions fly around the plane when no one is sitting on them, creating a safety problem? Or does a missing cushion mean the suspicion that soemone has stolen it and plans to use said cushion to cause safety issues on a plane? Just being silly, you don't have to answer these questions. :)

Actually the book came out right around then, I got it for Xmas that year, but it was too late to integrate Elphaba into my character. 139jugglingpaynes
AND...You can visit suge, cat and me!
141jugglingpaynes
We should have an HE convention.
142Kerian
That would be tres cool! Did you see the GD group is having a meet up this summer? I'm so jealous for our own group. I'd absolutely love that! Difficult with all the age ranges we have, though...so many are too young. Not for cat because she has you and she would only be there if you were, but some others wouldn't be able to.
144Kerian
Exactly. With younger members, I'm not even going to consider meeting them till they are grown up because at least the parents should be comfortable. Also, it's better for it to be near where they live versus them traveling far. At least, I think that would be a comfort. Not sure.
145rissa
see, I think depending on where we are meeting, she might be okay with it as long as all three of us were together.
146Kerian
Yes, it's nice that they have an older sister on LT. You must be a comfort to her. :)
I think it would be cool to meet with everyone on the west side of the US who is old enough. LG and I are in CA, a newby is also in CA if they stay around (you know we scare people away ;), and then north of CA... :)

147jugglingpaynes
I think meeting in a group is safer. My whole family accompanied me when we met suge! As a parent I can understand parents fears, but that's why a convention situation makes sense. Parents would be required to accompany minors, that's a no-brainer. The hardest part with us is that we're so spread out and some of us have limited funds for travel.
149Kerian
#147 jp:
I think my mother agrees as well. It seems like she's more nervous about me meeting LG than going to NY. ;) Yes, parents accompanying minors would be an excellent idea, though I jus can't iamgine us all meeting because it's true we are all over and there are those of us lacking the money for travel.
#148 rissa:
I remember you saying that. My sisters think it's funny and completely agree. They think we are all geeks as well and that nothing matters to us except books, books, and more books. *thinks about books* ;)

I don't know why it is but there seems something safer about people when you can peruse their bookshelves. It is the first think I do when visiting someone's home for the first time to.
151foggidawn
Right now, my travel money is limited, and once I start my new job, my travel time will be limited. I keep trying to think of ways to get to NYC at the same time as Kerian, and failing. But if we did decide to meet up when the theme park opens, I'll bet I could swing that!
152Kerian

Buses even all the way across the country are actually much cheaper than planes. The difference can be remarkable.

That was actually kind of my thought. Could you imagine everyone on a bus with the DVD players? Watching HP movies, Princess Bride, etc...

I bet west coasters could travel together, easter coasters, middle of the US..
hehe, I can't imagine anything except one side of the country, the other, and then where is between...to many states to keep track of. Basically, if you're not on the west coast, you are simply east as far as I'm concerned. ;)

LOL, that's where I started. Thinking about the NY/OH/KY/TN/PA people, who could all reasonably meet up somewhere and travel down together. Then my mind just took off running (I have a really long drive home and I have to have something to think of.)

I thought of that. I'm not sure what you define as a cardigan...don't think I have any. I have light weight jackets, sweaters, and a light-weight coat, though. I was planning on wearing one of my black jackets and have my coat in my carry on to wear if it got colder. I assume it will. Hot in NY? Does that mean short sleeve tops? Some non-full length jeans?

I keep missing suge. *grr*
Kerian, if your mom is really worried about me I can come to your house and pick you up and meet her at the same time. She & I are the same age, so I'm sure I can set her mind at ease.
I can't wait to meet you. It's going to be so fun!

LG, my mom is not the worrying sort - any worries are extremely minor except for when it comes to me walking at night. I just asked her if she'd prefer what you've suggested. She says I'm a big girl and can do what I want, hehe. I think because of my grandfather I'd prefer not meeting at my house. Can't wait to meet, you, too! :)

Hey suge,
I was just catching up and I saw the thing about you going crazy for a K makeover. I would love to see the transformation! Not that I can talk. I must be the only female in a 500 mile radius to not wear make up and only wear jeans and t-shirt most of the time. I'm allergic to make up, so that's my excuse! Ha ha!
I think the idea of a get together would be great! I just wish the minors could go, and I wish we all had enough money and time to go. Ah...if wishes were fishes...

A_R, would your parents let you have a get together with my sisters and me this summer? if we went to River Park Square or Aunties maybe?
197Always_Reading
that'd be awesome!
I'd bet they'd go for it if it were someplace with them.
Only problem is how to convince them I haven't given away personal information like address to find out we're close.
And I don't know how to paste my picture on LT!

if we chose a very specific location we wouldn't necesarily need to exchange pictures ahead of time.

I'm sorry about that. Have you tried hypoallergenic make-up? Someone once suggested Almay to me because they have products like that and I need it for my mascara.

I know how you feel. I have someone to convince that to myself. (No LG, not my mom. :)
As for posting a picture, get a photobucket or flickr account to start with. After that, our information thread can help you. See post # 21. :)

If I leave the house, I wear it. *blushes* I suffered a ____ of a lot of teasing in my teens, so...thank you to those pathetically immature boys who did marvelous wonders for my self-image. (That is dry humor right there.)

k, I may have never seen you, but I know that you are absolutely beautiful on the inside, and when you let people see that, you become beautiful to them.
204jugglingpaynes
Kerian, moisturizer will help that dry humor. :o)
Oops, I thought this was my thread!
I don't use makeup except for eyeliner every once in a while and acne cover when necessary. Luckily, I don't get a lot of acne.

Boy I am tired of this. I am tired of mean high school teachers and snotty boys and girls who don't know that they are beautiful yet.
K and Suge we already know you are beautiful.
No woman makes it to adulthood without some self-image problem.
MrsG I had a H.S. teacher who told me I would never be a soloist. Now I am old enough to know that he was a very small and unhappy man but he harmed a lot of students that way and you shouldn't have to put up with that crap.
I am tired of fantastic women I know being hard on themselves. Gets out superhero costume.. .

I've been thinking grrrr to my kid sister's friends and other classmates. She started the school year asking me every day if she was fat. She stopped eating at school and I don't know if it was to loose weight or if she just didn't want to eat in front of her friends. *shakes fist at pre-teens*

thanks guys I love you too and you know I cant really stay away from this wonderful place and you wonderful, interesting, intelligent, funny and beautiful people! I consider you all my cyber family.
I dont usually wear makeup, only on special occasions, when I dont want to scare people too too much. hee hee hee! I love eye makeup tho, when I do wear makeup I love very dramatic/smokey eyes :)

I love eye make-up, too. I think I need to google Twiggy, though, 'cause customers keep saying my eyes are made up like hers. I don't know what they're talking about.
*whispers to suge and cat* Ahem, twins? ;)

Twiggy is a model (or at least she used to be, I can't remember anymore). She is called Twiggy because she looks, well, Twiggy. I don't how she gets her eyes made up though, so I can't help you there. Googling will probably help.

Okay, googled and I am baffled because those customers are so wrong. See here. I sort of see what they're talking about.

You know what commercial I have always thoght was fantastic? That one by I think Dove featuring women of all sizes. My health teacher talked about it last year. That's the way it should be, not stupid ads of scrawnies everywhere.
Hehe, biblio. The trouble with LTing from work. I do not know what you mean. ;) Maybe I will in August or September when I am hoping I will have a new job, something at a desk. I am actually jealous so many LT from work - I feel like I'm missing out on a great experience. ;)

I save LT for my down time...
which is time I actually should be working on stuff, but it just helps to let my creative side flow, you know?

Probably no one would notice except that my work wouldn't get done. oooo, just realized it's after 9, time to move the plant.
240biblioholic29
*tee hee* I wish, it sounds more interesting that what I really do.
No, I move a plant twice every morning because I work in a building where I fact a big glass, east facing wall. So, if I don't move the giant plant on my desk to a certain point in the morning, I am blinded. But I can't keep it there all day because then nobody would be able to see me, which I would like but since I'm a receptionist, would probably be discouraged, so by 9 the sun is high enough that I can see and I move the plant back.
Edited to remove the "t" from the end of enough.

One advantage of paper books over e-readers when flying is that they make you shut the e-reader off during takeoff and landing, and that's when I'm most likely to want to be reading to take my mind off the flight.
244foggidawn
Wow, thread resurrection! I agree, varielle -- even though I have an ereader now, I carry at least one paper book when traveling, for times like that, and just in case something happens to the ereader.

I've been slowly plowing through all the old Hogwart's messages when I stumbled on this thread. :)
246MrAndrew
ploughing through... now there's an interesting expression, when you think about it.
1. plough through something to finish something that takes a long time and is difficult or boring
2. plough through someone/something to crash through something or a group of people with force, especially because you are moving or driving too quickly or in a careless or uncontrolled way
3. plough through something to move through something with a lot of difficulty
I'm going to go with 2.

So have we all been knocked over from definition #2, or are we in a field? Maybe we're both. ;)

250jugglingpaynes
Here's what I think happened. We were reading in a plane when we suddenly realized the plane was coming down fast and ploughed (according to definition #2) into an unturned field full of turnips. The impact mashed the turnips into a soft cushiony pulp so that we could walk away, book in hand, from the crash. When the pilot was interviewed after the crash, it was found he was flying while reading (FWR). He blamed LT for giving him too many ideas of what to read while on a plane.
