Tamerlane, His Rise and Fall by Beatrice Forbes Manz 2005

Tamerlane was a Mongol descendent of Genghis Khan, who lived from 1336 to 1405 and has been regarded as one of history’s greatest military tacticians. In the name of Islam he founded an empire that covered most of central Asia from Syria and Turkey to southern Russia and western India. He was a vicious conqueror, killing tens of thousands during his campaigns.

This book covers the fascinating life story of the last nomadic warlord, who in Europe was an enigma and engendered fictional romantic tales as well as terror. His story inspired writers and dictators as diverse as Marlowe and Stalin. He was both gifted and flawed, as Beatrice Forbes Manz coherently explains.

The 324 page book is beautifully bound in shimmering blue-grey metallic buckram, blocked on the cover with a black and silver device. There is a specially written 7 page preface by the author.

There are 12 pages of colour illustrations taken from the Garrett manuscript of the Zafarnama of Sharafuddin Ali Yazdi, and a separate colour frontispiece by Peter Siegel.

The appendix includes genealogies, details of his governments administration and an extensive index.

The endpapers are maps showing Eurasia in 1370 (front) and Tamerlane’s conquests (back). The 24.7x17.7cm. slipcase is plain dark grey.
