History Fans returns from the dead, err, deleted! Or at least a new group with an old name.

Since it seems unlikely we can resurrect the old History Fans group, I've decided to start a new one with the same name, hoping we'll get a bigger response than with the "General History" group which frankly is kind of a dull name. So, if you are a fan of history, join up and post!

I don't need to read your ad over and over.

I confess to finding "X Fans" the epitome of dull group names.

I enjoy the monthly reading threads, though.

Here I am! Would you like us to add some of our books from, say, November or maybe November and October?

>5 ulmannc: Please most as much as you wish. Since we can't go back and see the old posts I'm not sure if I remember your October books.

>3 MarthaJeanne: As I posted over on the other topic where you mentioned this, I only sent one message to each group. If you are subscribed to more than one of those groups, then my apologies but there is no other way I'm aware of to reach each of those groups other than posting to each one individually. I would welcome any information regarding alternative means.

Why did you advertise in multiple groups that haven't had a post in years?

Anyone with talk set to All Topics is then bound to get multiple copies, because they haven't ignored every dead group.

Not everyone has their Talk set to All Topics. I don't, for one.

It's easy to ignore them.

>8 MarthaJeanne: I posted to those groups because I belong to those groups. And if they haven't had a post in years, why not invite their members to a group that is actually active?

>9 Crypto-Willobie: Maybe I don't understand the concept behind someone having their Talk set to All Topics. Doesn't that mean that they receive a notification on every topic started or posted to? I just checked it out and it seems like there are posts arriving almost every minute. Why wouldn't someone just join the groups they are interested in?

Dunno.

No. LT does not send anyone notifications about topics started or posted to.

Why wouldn't someone just join the groups they are interested in?

The way in which a person views Talk is entirely separate from the groups they've joined. Aside from the fact that some groups are not "joinable" (standing and official groups), some people just want to see what's going on generally. Maybe they're not interested in actually joining a bunch of groups, but by setting their view at "All Groups", rather than "Your Groups", they are alerted if something pops up that strikes their fancy.

If there are groups or threads they don't want to see, they can put the group or thread on "Ignore".

>13 lilithcat: Nothing wrong with that if you prefer to keep doing things the way you've been doing. Personally so I could stop using All Topics, for groups that I wanted to see what gets posted in without officially 'joining' and for those system groups that are unjoinable, I use the "watch this group" option. I have many watched groups, and can generally see anything I might be interested in without going to All Topics, and without keeping up with 'ignoring' the steady stream of stuff I'm not currently interested in on All Topics. I occasionally check for new groups I'd want to watch (under the Groups tab), but relevant new groups don't happen often, so this is the lower-'maintenance' approach for me.

I use Your Posts, Your Groups, and Hot Topics on my Home Page module.

Now, see, I rarely, if ever, use the Home Page. I just come directly to Talk.

>17 lilithcat:

I now also use Groups (not Talk) when I want to look in on Pro and Con because having them on my Home Page module was overwhelming other groups and subjects. Since I exiled P&C I encounter much more variety of posts.

P&C has been on my “ignore” list for quite a while. I’m not sure anyone has ever followed the “simple rules” described on the Group page!

I use my Home Page module and have my Talk set to "Topics You've Posted To." Once or twice a week, however, I click on each of the Groups I'm a member of to see if there are any new threads I want to check in on and possibly contribute to. Also, from time to time I go to the Home Page of an LT member whose posts seem particularly thoughtful and erudite. (That's a lot of you, by the way!) One of the reasons I do that is to see if he or she is a member of any group I haven't heard of that I might want to check out.

Anyway, this is not the conversation I thought I'd be having when I responded to one of jz's invitation threads.

I'm happy to have this group launched!

Cheers, all!
