Tales of Beatrix Potter 2007
From the Folio Society blurb:-
“Beatrix Potter’s tales of endearing animals with human traits have been charming children for generations. An artist, author and conservationist, Potter was a woman of prodigious and varied talents and her love of flora and fauna is evident in her beautifully detailed, evocative drawings. Discouraged from pursuing a career in science, she published her first book (The Tale of Peter Rabbit) when she was in her thirties. Forty million copies have been sold since 1902 and its success led Potter to compose and illustrate a total of 23 books.”
These are beautifully presented little books, are just perfect for reading to your (grand)child at bedtime. Illustrated on every page, they vary from the very simple story (eg. Peter Rabbit) to the slightly more sophisticated (eg. The Tale of Piglet Bland), suitable for children from 2 to 5 years.
Showcased below is a set of 12 stories that was published in 2007. Another 11 stories were published in a similar format at the same time to complete the set of 23 stories. This set contains the following books - The Story of Miss Moppet; The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies; The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck; The Tale of Pigling Bland; The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher; The Tale of Two Bad Mice; The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-winkle; The Tale of the Pie and the Patty-Pan; The Tailor of Gloucester; The Tale of Benjamin Bunny; The Tale of Peter Rabbit; The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin.
The second 11 volume set (not shown here) contains - The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit, The tale of Tom Kitten, The Tale of Samuel Whiskers, The Tale of Ginger and Pickles, The Tale of Mrs. Tittlemouse, The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes, The Tale of Mr. Tod, Appley Dapply's Nursery Rhymes, The Tale of Jonny Town-Mouse, Cecily Parsley's Nursery Rhymes, The Tale of Little Pig Robinson.
The books vary in length from 55 to 80 pages. There is no introduction or editor, but these are reproductions of the original 1913 editions as produced by Penguin in 2002 with reset type and enhanced illustrations. The colour pictorial endpapers are the same in all volumes.
The books are bound in coloured cloth (each book a different colour) with gilt titling and an inset colour gloss paper label. The top edges of all pages are gilded. Each book 14.3x11.2cm. Blue publisher's slipcase (15x15.4x13.8cm.) with gilt title and pictorial onlay to one side.
In 2020 the Folio Society published 12 stories in a new format. Titled “The Tales of Beatrix Potter : The Heritage Collection” it includes The Tale of Peter Rabbit, The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin, The Tailor of Gloucester, The Tale of Benjamin Bunny, The Tale of Two Bad Mice, The Tale of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, The Tale of the Pie and the Patty Pan, The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, The Story of Miss Moppet, The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck, The Tale of the Flopsy Bunnies, The Tale of Pigling Bland. All volumes housed in a hinged pale blue cloth box with front and top gilt titling, and pattern printed interior.
The earlier series are all readily available on the secondary market, but they do tend to be quite expensive, although not nearly as pricey as the 2020 edition.

I own these and they are very lovely!
I was wondering whether the 2020 set is exactly the same except for the cloth colouring and box?

Thank you for sharing this.

I received the two sets for 20 Pounds as part of my becoming a member in 2012. (Plus The Wind in the Willows for free.) It was definitely a reason why I jumped the hurdle and joined although I was still much more inhibited about buying expensive books. It's such a beautiful set. And the investment paid off for FS - I really don't want to know how much of my money has gone their way in the meantime.
