I can't find the old thread but for those of us that are Austen fans tonight at 8:00 (at least in Chicago) is the broadcast of the Kate Beckinsale Emma.

For those who are interested, there will be a new version of Sense and Sensibility on PBS starting tonight.

I don't know how it can compare to the one staring Trewaley, Umbridge, Pomfrey, and Snape, though.

Anybody notice a Harry Potter actor last night? :) At first he seemed a bit creepy, I thought.

Mr. Weasley! I agree, he did seem a little too interested in Margaret at first.

I didn't get to watch it all :( I was tired from the last two chat nights! But I thought that Eleanor sounded almost exactly like Emma Thompson, same inflections, accent, and tone. It was a little weird. Oh and there will never be a Col. Brandon other than Alan Rickman, I don't know why they even try.

*sighs happily at mention of Rickman's Col. Brandon*

Now I really want to watch Sense and Sensibility.

I noticed that too Heath...She sounds just like Emma Thompson is was creaping me out...and yea Mr. Weasly didn't get much better in his creapiness...and no one will ever be a better Col. Brandon than Alan Rickman just like there is no better Mr. Darcy than Colin Firth.

I had to miss the first part but I am hoping to pick up the second half next week. It is hard to compete with Ang Lee's cinematography but I always like seeing what a new adaptation stirs up.

The second half of Sense and Sensibility is on PBS tonight, thought you'd like to know :)

Ahhh...Sense and Sensibility was soooo good.
I must admit, I've never read the book, but it's now on the top of my TBR pile!!! I'm now an official Austen fan!!!!!!

Is the Austen series over now? If so...I'm going to be very, very upset.

Yes I am afraid it is AR but with any luck they will rebroadcast the series. It looks like they are doing an adaptation of Room With a View next which is hard to imagine since the Merchant Ivory version neared perfection but I suspect I will watch it anyway.

They're doing a Room with a View next?! I can't imagine anyone other than Daniel Day-Lewis as Cecil! I imagine I'll watch too, but that is one of my all time favorite movies.

Hmmm...sounds an awful lot like Austen.
Are we quite sure that Austen didn't have a pen name?
I'll be watching it!!

AR from Austen you will add Forester it is a natural progression!

So A Room With a View should be on tonight. I'll be watching it!

#19 You know I soared through E.M. Forster but I just can't get through the first couple pages of Pride and Prejudice no matter how hard I try!

Don't know why Forster won't touchstone. :(

Did anyone else watch last night? Wormtail and Mr. Weasey were in it. It wasn't as good as the Merchant Ivory version, in fact it was eerily similar to the point where my mom said "are you sure this is a different version?" but they did a weird thing where they had George die in WWI, which kind of ruined the romanticism of the story for me.

Next week is a movie about Rudyard Kipling's wife and son. Playing Jack, his son? Daniel Radcliffe!

I had to miss it bib. I hope they will reair it. I can't imagine it coming close to the Merchant Ivory version but I woulds still like to see it.

How odd to have George die in WWI (I am going to have to check the book now about what it says about Lucy's life at the end because there is a bit about it. Still it is an odd place to end the film).

Our little Harry is growing up. I hope that picture comes through. Let me know if you can't see it and I'll just post a link.

#23 Yes, it was really depressing. I like the end of the Merchant Ivory movie. Well, I like the whole thing, I think it's the most romantic movie I've ever seen. And in the Masterpiece Theater version, Mr. Weasely plays the Reverend Mr. Beebe, and the swimming hole scene....well, that's not something I ever needed to see. Also, the guy who plays George is nowhere near Julian Sands and the guy who played Cecil certainly is no Daniel Day-Lewis. I mean really, there was no way they could ever match the original cast: Dames Judi Dench and Maggie Smith, Helena Bonham-Carter...

#24 Harry Potter with a mustache. I couldn't believe it when I saw the preview last night!

Apr 14, 2008, 12:56 pm

Oh dear. I can imagine biblio. I am right there with you on the original cast. Maybe we should add Room With A View (the Merchant Ivory version) to our group movie watch queue (after Harry Potter of course)

Oh dear I suspect the adaptation of Kipling is not going to be cheery. He's the one who wrote about WWI in My Boy Jack "If any question why we died/ Tell them, because our father's lied"

I'd love to see Room with a View again. I still remember Daniel Day-Lewis taking off his shoes. What an actor!

Foot acting!

Absolutely! This guy was nowhere near as wonderfully stuffy as DDL. This guy one could possibly fall in love with, no one could love DDL's Cecil!
