I'd like to join in again this weekend. I've started A Place Called Desolation and picked up The Technologists, The Unreasonable Virtue of Fly Fishing, and Field Notes from an Unintentional Birder from the library today. I hope to get a few pages from all of these.
5benitastrnad
I will be in again. I hope to finish reading Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand for my real life book discussion group.

I am in again. I got my first shot on Monday (yay!) but I still have several weeks ago until I'm fully protected.

I've missed the last few due to various things; however, I hope to get some reading done this weekend. I also need to work on a presentation I'm doing locally in a couple weeks, but I should be able to knock it out regardless.
11drneutron
Gonna try to have some reading time, but getting ready to move the mother-in-law in with us is taking way more time than it should.
12Chatterbox
Will try yet again. Hopefully I'll be more focused. May be a lot of audiobooks, to avoid sitting upright and disturbing stitches on my back where doc removed moles yesterday. Argh. Nibbled to death by ducks.
>11 drneutron: Good for you for expanding your household, Jim; hope all goes smoothly.

Sign me up. I'll be mostly busy this evening and not reading, but I hope to finish up some March reading this weekend. Anne, Washington DC.
>12 Chatterbox: Suzanne, I glanced too quickly at your post and saw "nibbled" and "moles" in the same line and got a very different impression than what you actually said. I hope the stitches don't cause too much discomfort.

Books read from: Four Women in a Violent Time, Colonial Women
Books finished: Four Women in a Violent Time
Time reading: ?
Time posting: ?
Snacks: Breakfast was donuts and tea
Thoughts: I am disappointed in the lack of primary source citations in these books. I am reading both because my 9th great-grandmother, Penelope Stout, is one of the women profiled. Four Women in a Violent Time puts words in her mouth in the form of quotations, yet it doesn't cite a source for those quotations.

>20 cbl_tn: That sounds interesting and disappointing, being about someone in your family but not explaining the source of the "quotations" properly.
22cbl_tn
>21 elkiedee: Everything I've learned about this woman is more legend than fact. The earliest sources were written several decades after her death. I wish these "accounts" would acknowledge that!
23Chatterbox
>20 cbl_tn: >21 elkiedee: It makes me crazy when a non-fiction writer makes claims/assertions/provides quotes and doesn't footnote them in any manner. Michael Lewis does this, routinely. Given that one of his books at least (about trading technology) is very flawed, I now read anything by him with that in mind.
It's noon in Rhode Island.
Books read from: Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu, The Consequences of Fear by Jacqueline Winspear and a re-read of Farthing by Jo Walton, then started Ha'Penny by Jo Walton (the sequel)
Books finished: 1, Farthing
Time reading: 7 hours
Snacks: cereal with fruit for breakfast
Thoughts: Warmer weather means neighbors are blasting music in their backyard today. Oh dear. Wish it would rain??
Non-book activities: Post surgery back is irritating (moles removed, stitches sore and itching. Must NOT SCRATCH.) Went to Athenaeum; returned some books and took out some more. LOL. My TBR mountain will never shrink.

Saturday, noon.
Books: Finished Micro Living: 40 Innovative Tiny Houses Equipped for Full-time Living, in 400 Square Feet or Less. I can't quite explain my fascination with tiny houses. I couldn't live in one full-time; too many books.
Eats: leftovers last night; just coffee this a.m. Boring. I need inspiration. Maybe go out for lunch or dinner today.
Other activity:
watching 'Killing Eve' tv series wth Sanda Oh.
Talking to landscapers about my yard. Now that our porch is finished we need an attractive vista to look out upon.
weather: sunny, 72 F. (22 C.) I have spring fever.

Saturday afternoon check-in
Books read from: I am listening to Henna Artist by Alka Joshiand am about to finish Travels With Epicurus: A Journey to a Greek Island in Search of a Fulfilled Life by Daniel Klein. I am also reading Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand.
Books finished: 0
Time reading: 1 hour today
Time posting:
Snacks: I had homemade rigatoni with mushrooms sauce for lunch today.
Thoughts: I am not really liking the Hilderbrand book that much, but it is for a real life book discussion group so will go ahead and finish it. A friend of mine really likes Hilderbrand's books and keeps telling me that it will get better towards the end.
Non-book activities: I had the Big Green Monster mowed yesterday because it was in between rainy spells. (I hate having a lawn and don't know why it has to be mowed.) I moved a couple of plants back from work today and got them trimmed and hung in the tree on my patio. I have so much work to do with my patio pot garden that I don't know where to start. I watched the This Old House marathon that was on my local PBS station this morning and found it fascinating. They restored a double house in Roxbury, MA in the 5 hours of the show and I enjoyed every minute of it. Now I have to hurry to get my granola in the oven before I go out for supper with friends. Not going to get much reading done today.
Total books finished since the read-a-thon began: 113
Total read from: 116
Total time reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 334.5 hours since April 2020.

Books read from: The Consequences of Fear by Jacqueline Winspear and a re-read of Ha'Penny by Jo Walton (the sequel)
Books finished: 1, The Consequences of Fear
Time reading: 4.5 hours
Snacks: Noodles with shrimp & vegetables, a cold version with sesame-based dressing.
Thoughts: Looking at my mass of stuff and wondering how to find energy to tackle it. Why do all socks lose their mates?
Non-book activities: Accidentally locked myself out when I went to pick up an Amazon household necessities package. The wind blew the door closed and for some reason the lock was engaged. After a brief panic attack, I was immensely relieved that (a) my top floor neighbors were home and (b) they had a copy of my key. I was outdoors without my mask or my phone, as well as without my keys. That has never happened to me here before, although it happened once in NYC (same scenario, wind pressure from the back of the apartment shoved the door closed, this time when I went out to answer the doorbell. I was stuck in between my (locked) front door and my (locked) grill gateway. I had to send someone to get a locksmith, while I waited, wearing a t-shirt, kimono and flip-flops.
Total books finished: 2, Farthing by Jo Walton and The Consequences of Fear by Jacqueline Winspear. The latter was mediocre.
Total read from: 6, the two I've finished plus Travels With Epicurus by Daniel Klein, Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu, Ha'Penny by Jo Walton and the first two chapters or so of Lord Edgware Dies by Agatha Christie via audiobook.

Saturday night check-in
Books read from: Henna Artist by Alka Joshi and am a couple more pages in Travels With Epicurus: A Journey to a Greek Island in Search of a Fulfilled Life by Daniel Klein. I spent most of my evening reading time in Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand.
Books finished: 0
Time reading: 1 hour over supper
Time posting:
Snacks: Supper was a couple of enchiladas out of my freezer. The kind you buy in packages from the freezer section of the grocery store.
Thoughts: The Henna Artist is really good. Might be the best work of historical fiction I have read this spring.
Non-book activities: Got my granola baked and that was about all I did this evening. I watched two hours of old Julia Child TV shows and knitted while watching them. Somehow I made a mistake and got off one stitch. I am over half done with this wrap and this was the first time I got off with my stitches. I had to rip out some rows and do my knitting over.

It's about 10:30 a.m. in Rhode Island. Battling a migraine and waiting for the rain to start to help it.
Books read from: a re-read of Ha'Penny by Jo Walton, picked up Half a Crown by Jo Walton (the final book in the series), also another couple of chapters of Lord Edgware Dies by Agatha Christie, the audiobook.
Books finished: 1, Ha'Penny
Time reading: 5 hours
Snacks: Skipped dinner last night, which was stupid. Had a hot cross bun last night, and cereal this morning.
Thoughts: I hate migraines. I love my cats.
Non-book activities: Not much. Listening to audiobooks today because I can't read with a migraine. Kinda dreading the coming week, which will include lotsa work.
Total books finished: 3, Farthing and Ha'Penny by Jo Walton and The Consequences of Fear by Jacqueline Winspear. The latter was mediocre, but I was surprised by my re-read of the Walton alt-history novels. The plotting is very clever/adroit, especially in book #2, where Walton's version of alt-history combines with the play within a play, which in this case is a staging of Hamlet.
Total read from: 7, the three I've finished plus Travels With Epicurus by Daniel Klein, Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu, Half a Crown by Jo Walton and the bit of Lord Edgware Dies by Agatha Christie via audiobook.
Total time reading: 20.5 hours

Sunday morning check-in
Books read from: Henna Artist by Alka Joshi and Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand. I finished Travels With Epicurus: A Journey to a Greek Island in Search of a Fulfilled Life by Daniel Klein. I am going to start reading River Horse by William Least-Heat Moon
Books finished: 1 - Travels With Epicurus by Daniel Klein
Time reading: .5 hours before bed last night.
Time posting:
Snacks: breakfast was some of my granola (which isn't as good as it was last week - but still good. I think I needed to put in more spices - particularly the ginger and nutmeg should have been ramped up.) and my usual Sunday morning hazelnut cappuccino from Starbucks - which was terrible this morning. But there was no line in the drive through.
Thoughts: I started reading Travels With Epicurus a year ago as part of my short books project. It got buried in my backpack and I never got back to it. I like travel books and this months Non-Fiction challenge was comfort reads. Since I had cleaned out my backpack I decided that it was time to finish this book. I don't advise waiting to finish reading a book about philosophy after a year long hiatus. I think I missed out on a good deal of what Klein was trying to say.
Non-book activities: I watched "Travels in Japan" and "Trails to Oshii'' this morning on PBS and really enjoyed them. I will miss these programs when I leave a Big City Market for cable TV and move to the boondocks.

>42 torontoc: How did you like Klara and the Sun? I enjoyed it, especially the same kind of slow reveals that Ishiguro has used in his other novels. But ultimately a bit more facile than I expected in terms of themes. Still worthwhile for writing/characterization, though.
It's getting on for 9 p.m. in Rhode Island, and my migraine has finally abated (the rain started, which helped!)
Books read from: Half a Crown by Jo Walton (the final book in the series), Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu, the first few chapters of The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman and dipping into a couple of other books to see what I'll pick up next.
Books finished: 1, Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu
Time reading: 6 hours
Snacks: Chicken salad sandwiches for lunch; vegetable curry with naan for dinner.
Thoughts: So relieved that the mild weather means I can relish the fresh air blowing in through the windows.
Non-book activities: Not much. Trying to be quiet, and to quiet my thoughts. Trying to organize my ideas.
Total books finished: 4, Farthing and Ha'Penny by Jo Walton, The Consequences of Fear by Jacqueline Winspear and Aftershocks by Nadia Owusu. The last of these -- a memoir -- was by far the best book I've read this weekend.
Total read from: 8, the four I've finished plus Travels With Epicurus by Daniel Klein, Half a Crown by Jo Walton and bits of the audiobooks of Lord Edgware Dies by Agatha Christie and The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. The last of these was a book I've seen recommended in a lot of places and it's tremendously entertaining.

Sunday night check-in
Books read from: Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand. I finished listening to Henna Artist by Alka Joshi. I started two new books. I am reading River Horse by William Least-Heat Moon and started listening to Summer of '69 by Elin Hilderbrand. Both of these are for my real life book discussion groups.
Books finished: 1 - Henna Artist by Alka Joshi
Time reading: 1 hour at lunch
Time posting:
Snacks:supper was vegetable soup and cheese toast with my co-author at her house.
Thoughts: I really really liked Henna Artist. This is the best work of fiction I have read so far this year. I started another Elin Hilderbrand book. I found out that I have been reading the wrong title for one of my real life book discussion groups. I have been reading Barefoot and we were supposed to be reading Summer of '69. I went to the library this afternoon and got the other book, but I only have about 100 pages to read in Barefoot, so I am going to go ahead and finish it. No harm in reading more books than required. I hope to get about 50 pages of Barefoot read before I go to sleep tonight.
Non-book activities: I met with my co-author and we did the final grammar edits on the journal article. We hope that it gets posted this week. But it may be next week. I had a nice quiet supper with her while we talked about citation counts and bibliometrics and what they don't mean.

weekend wrap-up
Books:
Still reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and
my audio book, Devolution: a Firsthand Account of the Rainier Sasquatch Massacre
Have also started Small Houses
Sunday dinner was rice pilaf and garden salad. Glass of port for dessert.
Other activity:
Into season 3 of Killing Eve. Bizarre, but strangely compelling.
Family FaceTime
First visit with my mom in her memory care residence since their covid shut-down. She was awake only briefly and not too responsive. I think she has declined quite a lot during isolation.

You aren't alone in that. All of the publishers are showing a big slow down in sales of Literary novels. I am not exactly sure what they mean by literary novels but the sales there have really slowed in the last 5 years.
