The Assassins, A Radical Sect in Islam by Bernard Lewis 2005
This is a scholarly and detailed history of a particularly radical Islamic sect, and how their name came to be associated with the killing of distinguished people in almost every European language. The early years of Islam are discussed, the schisms that led to the two large divisions of the religion (Sunni and Shia), and their further fragmentation into a huge array of minor radical or reformist sects.
There are extensive links to notes at the back of the book, and a 53 page extract from “Genghis Khan, The World Conqueror” that describes the Assassins from a different perspective. There is a five page preface by the author and a comprehensive index.
There is some discussion that the modern terrorist Jihadist has philosophical and ideological connections to the ancient assassins.
The xiii + 242 page book has 14 bound-in colour plates of Islamic miniatures and photographs, and is bound in blood red cloth cover blocked with an image in gilt, green and black. The map endpapers printed black on light brown. The plain red slipcase is 23.6x15.7cm.
