A Victorian Trilogy by Asa Briggs - Victorian People, Victorian Cities, Victorian Things 1996
This beautifully presented three volume set covers every aspect of life in Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria. From the Reform Bill of 1867 and the Great Exhibition of 1851 to the education system and the growth of industrial cities such as Manchester, everything is covered. It is the history of the age with people left in. As one reviewer stated, “Shoes and sealing wax are as much the stuff of history as cabbages, ships and kings”. Briggs covers it all.
The three volumes are Victorian People (264 pages), Victorian Cities (334 pages) and Victorian Things (406 pages).
Strikingly bound in maroon cloth the volumes are blocked on cover and spine with a design in gold, black and another colour (different for each volume) by David Eccles. There are twelve pages of bound-in colour and monochrome plates, a bibliography and index in each volume. The endleaves are printed with a grey pattern on a colour to match that on the binding. The page tops are coloured red. Asa Briggs has written a preface, and the text is printed on thick, sensually textured Ibis White paper.

I would enjoy it if Folio would return to using textured papers such as this more commonly. Using such papers seems to be getting less and less frequent.
