Hi
We are in the process of setting a community library does anyone know if you can use any barcode and barcode scanner with the tiny cat library management system or do you have to use cuecat?
Many Thanks

Hi C,

Thanks for your interest in LibraryThing and TinyCat! We offer full barcode support, meaning you can use any labels and scanners you like. As long as your scanner reads your barcodes, you can input your barcodes into LibraryThing's "Barcode" field, and you'll be able to scan-to-search or scan-to-checkout items as needed within LT or TC. I hope this helps.

Please check out the blog post on barcode support for more information: https://blog.librarything.com/main/2015/06/new-feature-barcode-support/, and let me know if you have further questions.

>3 OLDSALT56: Short answer: As long as your barcode scanner can read the barcode/s you're reading in LibraryThing/TinyCat, we should be able to support it.

Long answer: The main factor you need to consider when buying a scanner is what kind of barcode symbologies or codes the scanner can read. That is, you need to find a scanner that can read the symbology of the barcodes you're actually using. If you're only using ISBN barcodes, for example, those use EAN/EAN-13 barcode symbology. You'll want to find a scanner that reads EAN/EAN-13 barcodes. Additionally, if you're using LibraryThing's barcode labels ( https://www.librarything.com/more/store/barcodes ), those use Code 39 aka CODE 3 OF 9 symbology (one of the most common symbologies out there).

If you're not sure what symbologies your potential scanner reads, you can message the manufacturer for that information, or just tell them what barcodes you need it to read and they should be able to help further. I hope this helps.
