I thought it might be a good idea to have threads for different authors from the 1001. To share impressions and questions - not full review of the works. many of the authors are represented by several works. to begin: I just finished reading "the fall of the house of usher." I wasn't too impressed really. then I downloaded a recording of "the pit and the pendulum" from iTunes - only about 2 dollars. the narrator was good and the story exciting. also downloaded "the purloined letter," which was free. I'll listen to it soon and see whether the audio version or the written version is better. by the way, are there more poe-stories on the list? can't see any but I might have overlooked something.

There are not any others on the list, but he has many other great stories.

The Purloined Letter is an example of one of Poe's detective stories which he is often credited as creating. The Fall of the House of Usher is an example of his supernatural/horror style. The Pit and Pendulum is horror without the supernatural element.

It is hard to know which ones to really recommend. Stories such as Diddling are a far cry from The Tell-Tale Heart for example. If you read only one more, I would highly recommend The Masque of the Red Death.

actually I probably read every single one of his stories years ago - remember especially liking the masque and the cask of amontillado - and the tell-tale heart as well. There are really quite a few I'd like to reread. thanx for the input!

I have always enjoyed The Cask of Amontillado. If you like poetry, his is lyrical, if not a bit disturbing.

I forgot about the Masque, I really enjoyed that story (kind of dark, obviously, but so interesting)

The Tell-Tale Heart is such a tense story, the anxiety is sooo streched out. Poe's poetry, other than "The Raven", doesn't get much attention, but "The Conqueror Worm" is as horrifying as his stories.

I'm with tiddleyboom. I loved The Cask of Amantillado. The Tell-Tale Heart is a close second place for me.
