>1 jroger1: Does anyone know if this edition has a slipcase? I know some of the books do arrive with different packaging than is listed, i.e. Dore's fairy tales told again, which had a clamshell packaging in the photos, but arrived with a slipcase.

>2 Gilded_Tomes1: Considering that this is a brand new edition, I'm not sure how anyone would know one way or the other. You might want to call customer service and see if they can tell you.
5Gilded_Tomes1
>3 jroger1: I just ask because the Notre Dame DLE doesn't show a slipcase, but the books actually come with one. I will just call customer service :-)

I’m a dedicated Poe fan, but if I were to buy this DLE it would be the most expensive single volume in my collection. The cost I’m sure is due to its size and the reproduction of Dore’s 25 or so full-page illustrations. I don’t think I can justify replacing my perfectly good Chartwell/Easton edition I mentioned in another thread, especially considering that it contains additional poetry than just The Raven. But if I didn’t already have a Poe/Dore/Raven book, I would jump at this opportunity.
Warning — the book is 18 1/4 inches high, taller then the Kelmscott Chaucer, and most bookcases don’t have a shelf that tall. Mine don’t.

>6 jroger1: Yeah, I was looking at that... I don't know why they chose such an enormous format. I don't even think they make shelves deep enough for the width let alone the height. I suppose I can store them next to me at work on industrial sized shelves with the dinosaur fossils, hahaha

“Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary,
Over the curious volume of forgotten lore—standing next to my fossil.”
“Nevermore” cried the tyrannosaurus!

I'm one of the few who actually enjoy a few oversized books in their library. Here is EP's oversized Tennyson/Dore - Idylls of the King 14" x 16" book (bottom left of shelf).
To think this Raven offering is two inches bigger in both width and height ... yeah ... definitely needs a special place to display it for sure.
I'm interested but ... not for that price. Being only one poem and only 120 pages (272 pages less than Idylls of the King). $50 more than the original price of Idylls. Also seems to have much fewer illustrations.
Andy my only wish for this title is that the illustrations are more 'full page'. I love the Idylls book but I always wished the illustrations weren't 'framed' within the page (as seen in above photo) ... wish there wasn't so much wasted white border around each illustration.
Either way ... seems like an interesting offering. Just not sure if it's for me at the moment.

>13 Gilded_Tomes1: thank you and yes Dracula book is just incredibly scary. Glows in the dark. Please post picture of your library with sideshow collectibles trex. I was asking you for it in previous thread too. Please don’t let me sound like a broken record and just post a picture of your beautiful books lol
Go to postimages.org and select from your photo library then copy it and paste it here, unless you use something else. Thank you Margaret

>10 fancythings: yeah ... two of my favorite things ... books and guitars. Life is good when both are near! Love your collection too ... i think we have similar taste. :)
>12 Gilded_Tomes1: Dore Illustrations are amazing. I have a very old and large two volume (extremely heavy and big) bible with Dore illustrations ... it has quite a bit of ware on the cover edges ... but it is an amazing sight to behold.
Besides Arthur Rackham ... Dore is my favorite!

>15 thisGuy33: I also have a 2 vol oversized EP DLE edition of King James Bible illustrated by Dore. Incredibly heavy volumes and very gorgeous. One of the most dramatic and out of this world beautiful illustrations.

I think the Dore Bible was intended for church lecterns, as it is virtually impossible to read at home. The 1611 King James Bible is almost as bad, and the Kelmscott Chaucer comes close. This is why I no longer buy books taller than 11 inches.

>17 jroger1: well, I read it okay on my beautiful desk with leather insert. I put it right on soft leather and read it without any issues. Large font and illustrations makes it for incredible reading experience. I especially enjoy Exodus story and Dore illustrations of it. The best!!!

You obviously have a better desk than mine and you are accustomed to studying at it. But after 51 years of working at a desk day in and day out, I refuse to do it any more. If I can’t read it on my lap, it doesn’t get read!

>27 Davey_B: It's just one person on here flagging everyone: @fancythings. He/she has created several accounts trying to take down anyone new. I read on here he/she is a dental student who gets mommy and daddy to buy all their books, and then goes around trolling because they're bored.
There's good people on here, it's just that they're getting drowned out amid all the noise

>32 GOBOGIE: seriously!!!
This world has become so divisive ... one would think and hope that a book forum would be our last sanctuary of peace and quiet from idiots.
And I purposefully say 'idiots' knowing it's dismissiveness ... so lets not argue that point.

I would love to own this, but I don't have bookcases that would house an elephant folio. I'm happy to lie larger books on their sides, but at 14 1/4" wide it would still overhang my shelves.
It's good to see EP's continued dedication to Doré though.

>2 Gilded_Tomes1: I got my copy today. It does not come with a slipcase. The paper stock is REALLY thick!
37nau2002
Does anybody know why it is 120 pages? The poem isn't that long, so does this mean there are other poems as well?
38jroger1
>37 nau2002:
It is a very large and heavy book with heavy stock paper and 27 full-page illustrations by Gustave Dore. Each illustration is preceded by a page containing the appropriate line from the poem. No other poems are included, but there is a 5-page introduction.
Unless you are a Poe aficionado (as I am), you can think of it more as an art book than poetry. If you have seen EP’s DLE of “Idylls of the King,” the style is similar, but “The Raven” is even larger.
