Hello!
Hope someone can help me out. Read a book a good 17 years ago: set in the 1860s/1870s, a spoilt New York society boy (who was “saved” from an imprudent match by his parents and sent to Europe to cool his heels) marries a woman whom he meets on the ship back to the US. He thinks she is a poor, Irish-Catholic girl, so he feigns affection for her and convinces her to marry him to spite his very Protestant, New York elite family. Unbeknownst to him she is the illegitimate daughter of a British aristocrat, was raised to the finer things in life and has a wealthy, titled half-sister that will find her later in the book. The female MC also has an Irish friend who is in love with her, but impoverished (he works in construction in New York at some point in the novel). If I remember correctly, the unlikeable male MC is driven to a lot of his behavior because the girl he had been in love with (and who was deemed inappropriate for him to marry) died giving birth to his illegitimate child while he was abroad.
There’s a lot of drama, some extramarital affairs and misunderstandings (so a bit messy and not the idealized HEA type novel).
Would really appreciate if someone knows the author and/or title.
Thanks!
Edit: I found it. It’s An Embarrassment of Riches by Margaret Pemberton
