The Life of Mozart, Including His Correspondence by Edward Holmes 1991

Written in 1845, this comprehensive biography of Amadeus Mozart is still considered to be the definitive work. With extensive explanatory footnotes, integrated extracts of correspondence and music, it details every part of the great composer’s life from birth to death.

The correspondence is particularly interesting, as are Mozart’s travels from London to Rome, Paris and everywhere in between. His relationships with princes, electors, archbishops and fellow composers are interesting. Although he was recognised, and toured as, a child prodigy, and although being feted as a great composer of everything from sonatas to operas, he seemed to be unrewarded financially for his work, and was seldom able to live the life of ease he expected, and at court was sometimes considered as merely another servant.

The 318 page book was edited by Christopher Hogwood who also wrote an introduction and additional notes. There are 24 pages of monochrome contemporary prints and paintings and one map. It is quarter bound in dark red cloth, with blue cloth boards decorated a cover silhouette of Mozart in red and gold. The light brown endleaves are printed in dark brown with a musical score and the dark red slipcase is 25.8x16.5cm. The page tops are stained red.

Ten years after Mozart, in 2001, The Folio Society published The Life of Beethoven in the same style.

Thanks Warwick. I too have been on the hunt and bought a copy of the Mozart. I also found a book on Berlioz as well that popped into my shopping cart!
