50 sounds like a lot -- I'm a slow reader.
For the past couple of years, my goal was to read 26 books in a year.. average one every two weeks. Audiobooks counted. Last year I made it, I think, but I had to count a few things that were pretty short. And, this rule made me less likely to stop reading books I didn't like in the middle, which I don't think is necessarily a good thing.
This year I have two resolutions, to try to make sure I don't cheat.
- read 26 books in 2008 (minimum)
- read an average of 20 pages/day, or 7,320 pages this year (minimum)
For the first category I'm still letting audiobooks count, but I'm not sure what to do about the 3 books that I started in 2007 and didn't finish until 2008.
For pages, audiobooks don't count, but random things I read that aren't whole books do (and books I put down without finishing).
For page count, on April 1st I finally caught up to being on track after being way behind for a long time. Now I'm behind again. As of yesterday (4/5) I'm up to 1899 (average is 19.78.)
(You could argue that I'd be better off reading instead of keeping careful track of page counts, but I think I read more this way than I did before.)
For books read entirely in 2008, I have 6 so far:
No Country For Old Men
Cold Dog Soup
On Writing
The Writing Life
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
The Notebooks of Don Rigoberto
I'll probably give myself one more point for the three partial books.
