Ok, since you guys were so great in helping me decide about Lord of the Rings, I figured I'd ask for your take on rereads. First, would you count a reread book towards your challenge? Second, what constitutes a reread? I listened to an unabridged audio version of The Golden Compass several years ago (which was really fantastic by the way - it was like auditory theater). So, I was thinking I'd like to actually read the novel. Does that constitute a reread since I didn't actually read it the first time?

Interesting....I'm considering rereads as an actual category. In general, I don't like to reread -- BUT having just done it with a couple of books, I found I actually like it! In general, I think a book read this year is a book read this year. In the school my kids go to, they encourage rereading -- you get different things out of it the next time.

I agree with whoot. The second time you read a book is often a different experience than the first. Especially if you're going from an auditory "read" to a visual read.

I made a separate category for rereads. And that was the first one I finished! Everything else I am reading for the first time.
As for the audio version, I think I could go either way.

Good point. I personally am using my 888 challenge as a way to steer me through my TBR pile, so including rereads doesn't make much sense for me. But I studied Jane Eyre a few months ago in excruciating detail, and even though I had read it before, I included it. Like CarlosMcRey said, it was a different experience.
In your case, I'd include a book that I'm now reading but had previously listened to. Sounds reasonable. Remember, this is your challenge, YOU set your own rules.

I think that even if you decide to eliminate most rereads you should still include those that were long enough ago that you don't remember much about them.

It sounds like in that case, a reread would count. I tend to count them for my list only if they aren't ones I am constantly rereading (ie-I reread Handmaid's Tale just about every year) and there are many books on my TBR pile that have an additional-AGAIN-tag because I don't remember much about the book. And, as always, it's your challenge. You get to make the rules!

It really helps that there seems to be a consensus to count it. Now I don't think I will feel like I'm cheating. I realize it's a personal thing, but I don't want to get to the end of the challenge and not feel that sense of accomplishment because I did something that was questionable - even if it's just in my head.
>7 kaelirenee:
I agree about not counting the repeated rereads. For me, it would be any of the Harry Potters (except for book 7, which I've only read once) or The Stand.
Thank you all for helping me make a decision.
