The shortlist for the Giller Prize has just been announced. Here are the five books chosen by the jury:
Lesser Known Monsters of the 21st Century by Kim Fu, a short story collection
Stray Dogs by Rawi Hage, also short stories
We Measure the Earth with Our Bodies by Tsering Yangzom Lama, a novel about Tibetan refugees
The Sleeping Car Porter by Suzette Mayr, a novel about (you guessed it) a sleeping car porter on a trip west in 1929
If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English by Noor Naga, a novel about a romance between an Egyptian American woman and an Egyptian man in the aftermath of the Arab Spring.
As usual I haven't read any of them but I do want to read The Sleeping Car Porter and We Measure the Earth with our Bodies. I just got a gift certificate for our local independent bookstore so I think I might use it for those two.

The Sleeping Car Porter just came in at the library - woohoo! I’ve only read Stray Dogs and really enjoyed the stories. I have some catching up to do!
