How to I check in returned books?

How do I check in returned books? I see the transactions here: https://www.librarycat.org/admin/transactions but I don't see a way to check in/out. Neither can I tell how to do it from https://www.librarycat.org/admin/checkinout. Thanks in advance!

>1 DonnaGarel: You just want to scan in the checked-out books that you're marking as returned on the Check in/out page (https://www.librarycat.org/admin/checkinout), and make sure the status is set to "Returned", then click the "Save" button to return those items. If they were checked out to a patron prior to you adding the "Returned" status, they'll get returned under the appropriate patron/s.

Let me know if you have further q's about this!

Today, 11/27/23 i began to check out books following the instructions on the check in/out tab. Book checked out to the patron just fine. In trying to return it, i found that although it is easy to find the book, mark returned and save the return, when i go to the patron, it is not registered as returned by the patron. What am i doing wrong?

Can you tell me some extra details so we can look closer at this?
1. What browser and OS (operating system) are you using (e.g. Google Chrome, version 90 and Windows 7, etc.)? Do you have any browser add-ons or extensions such as an ad or pop-up blocker?
2. What title are you trying to mark as returned? I see one title in your lending history (https://www.librarycat.org/lib/StPiusXCatholic/item/248244266), I just want to make sure it's the same one.
3. How are you trying to mark the title as returned: what are the steps you're taking to return the item? Please include numbered steps for what page you start on (e.g. the Check in/out page, the detail/book page, etc.), what links/buttons you're clicking for each step to mark the item as returned, and what's happening after each step. Please note any error message/s you're seeing, or if nothing appears to be happening, etc.

Thanks in advance for your help, and your patience.

Hi there, I have tried checking in a book from the Checkin/out page https://www.librarycat.org/admin/checkinout (and saving it) and from the Admin - item circulation option at the bottom of a search page https://www.librarycat.org/lib/Jahsena/item/261852301 and changing the new status to return and saving it. I see it marked saved in green both ways, yet when I search the book again, it still shows checked out. Here is an example Edmonton, gateway to the North https://www.librarycat.org/lib/Jahsena/item/261852301, or this one https://www.librarycat.org/lib/Jahsena/item/261869611 or this one https://www.librarycat.org/lib/Jahsena/item/262261126. I would like to change them all from checked out to Other - Reference inhouse use only - unavailable (and have the place hold button hidden). I have tried both checking in the book first and then changing to other, and changing to Other from the checked out status, but both ways the item continues to show as checked out.

>6 Jahsena: Thanks for the note, and sorry for the trouble! Are you still seeing this issue? I see the items with updated statuses, now; perhaps there was a delay when you were doing your previous saving.

Please let me know if you're still seeing any inconsistencies and we'll be happy to take a closer look, thanks.

Hello there, this is happening again where it is not changing the setting from checked out, to unavailable with the hold button removed. I am doing all the right things. Does Tinycat not update on Sundays? or is it so slow that I cannot make changes on the spot? This is not good functioning for a library...I am disappointed...

>8 Jahsena: Hi there, I'm so sorry you're still experiencing issues. Please let me know which books and how you are going through the check in process this time. I need to be able to replicate the issue to help resolve it and those steps will allow me to do so. Thanks so much for your patience.

Sincerely,
Zeph

Hello there, I was able to change some items to the settings unavailable and inhouse use only and have the place hold removed yesterday for a while. Now it is back to now responding the my saved settings. How long does it take to update the changed settings? How can I see my changes reflected in the catalogue quickly?

Hi there, I have spent several hours again changing the status of every item (136 items) in the Western Canadian Collection (WES) to Other....Western Canadian Collection...not available. I do it from the Checkin/out page https://www.librarycat.org/admin/checkinout page searching for the title, making the 3 changes, then saving my changes. I see the green save, the title turns tan from green, but when I search for the item again, it still has the place hold icon on the page and the "Western Collection inhouse use only" has not turned red. I did this on previous days with the Canadian collection, and the Ref collection as well - some worked, some did not. Please help. I have wasted so much time. If you search in advanced by collection in Advanced you will see the titles.

>11 Jahsena: Hi @Jahsena! I dug into your custom lending status for "WESTERN COLLECTION - INHOUSE USE ONLY" and it looks like that status was saved to mark items as available, rather than unavailable. I've fixed that status's settings for you, now, so you should be all set.

Please let me know if I can do anything else to help.

>Zeph are you able to help me? In message 11, you can see both my process and all 136 items that were changed but not appearing properly as they should (with the Hold option removed)...thank you

>12 kristilabrie: Kristi, then I do not understand why it is not saving the unavailable choice I made; in each case I changed all three things (other, Western Collection, and unavailable) at the same time and saved the changes. The system must not been registering all the changes at one time - is that correct? Do I have to do it separately? I know I changed every item to unavailable at the same time as the other changes.

>14 Jahsena: It's hard to say exactly what might have happened...

When you originally create a new custom lending status, you have the option to format that status. The workflow is as follows:
1. Go go https://www.librarycat.org/admin/checkinout
2. scan or enter items to your Item List
3. Under "New Status", select Other, then select the "other..." option from the dropdown menu.
4. Enter the name of the new "Other status", then select the option from the dropdown menu below to determine how that status will act on items with that status: "mark as available", "mark as unavailable", or "no change". Select the next option to mark "No patron", or "Patron name allowed" with the status.
5. Enter the Date option as needed, then select the "Save" button.

You do not need to mark every single item as unavailable when you create a new lending status; rather you are formatting the newly created status the first time you use it/create it.

When you initially created the "Western Collection - Inhouse use only" status in your library, did you have all 136 records under your Item List? Are you sure you marked the status as "mark as unavailable"? If so, there may be some further testing required on our end. Otherwise, please note if you see this issue crop up again and we'll be happy to take a closer look!
