The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett 2006

The Secret Garden is a gentle easily read young adult novel that revolves around a bratish orphaned ten year old girl from India, an obnoxious invalid boy and a peasant boy who all end up in the secret garden of an isolated mansion on the Yorkshire moors. Their adventures and interaction with nature make the story.

First published in 1911, it is a work of its era, and the delightful eight bound-in colour illustrations by Charles Robinson (1870-1937) are taken from this first edition.

Unusually for a FS book, there is no introduction. The title page is reminiscent of that in the 1911 edition. The endpapers are plain green, and the book is bound in green cloth, cover blocked in black and gilt with drawing adapted from one of Robinson’s paintings. The 23.7x17.3cm. slipcase is plain green.

There was an earlier edition of the book published by the Folio Society in 1986. This had 41 drawings by Dodie Masterman and was bound in green cloth with an illustration in dark green by Masterman.

Another perfect example of the value of The Archives: I normally wouldn't have shown any interest whatsoever in this book, but on closer inspection at least the illustrations seem quite lovely.
