A possible Virago reading project for 2023????

Dear fellow Viragoites,

I have been having a think about a project for this year, as it's always nice to have reading events to keep us coming back to our collections! I had drawn a blank until a realised, from the mentions on social media, that this year sees 50 years of Virago books. Although the Modern Classics range started later, it may be something we could celebrate although that plan is not without its complexities...

The first VMC, Frost in May, was as we know released in 1978, so if we were planning to do some kind of reading event this would be the point that the Classics started. I have been wracking my brains to think of a way we could divide up the up-to-50 years into chunks to read from each month e.g. five years to choose from per month, which would take us for 10 months of the year, and then we could have two months of free reading from any of the periods.

However, that's complicated by two factors - the late start of the VMCs, and also the fact that our collection tracker doesn't give the dates the books were published by Virago, only the original publication date (unless I'm missing something...)

I wonder whether others have thoughts on this? It would be lovely to join in celebrating Virago's birthday, but I'm struggling to make this project fit!

So do let me know if you have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions - it would be lovely to get a Virago 50 reading project under way!

>1 kaggsy: Great idea, Karen! I can think of a couple of options.

* We use the VMC number as a proxy for the year--so in February we would read one from ##1-70, in March from ##71-140, etc.
* We add the publication years to the collection tracker. That would take a little time but I would work on it if the preference is to use publication years.

>2 NinieB: Oh, great options! And actually I like your first one of divvying them up according to numbers. This might be better in that some years might have less books released so using numbers and having an even amount of books available for each month gives more of a spread of choice!

As for the tracker, I'm not sure how up to date that is, but putting the pub dates in would be quite a commitment!

I wonder what others think??

>1 kaggsy:, > 2, Ninie -I think your first option is a very good idea as it provides a wide range to chose from.
Re: publication date - Ninie, if you decide to enter the P/D on the tracker, I can verify dates of the titles as I hold the complete VMC collection but have it shelved in alphabetical order not by release date.

>2 NinieB: I like the first option as well.

It will be good to have another group reading challenge this year. Thanks for putting your thinking cap on, Karen!

>3 kaggsy: Yes, I would be interested in reading by VMC number. And I agree with Ninie that we start with February. I also like having a free month at the end, for catching up any months we missed.

>6 bleuroses: Cate - I have failed miserably to successfully post photos to the board in the past but will consult my tech advisor (my lovely niece) and see if I can successfully do it. 😊
