The Necklace & Other Stories by Guy de Maupassant 1993

This book comprises 23 short stories that vary from 42 to 6 pages in length, that were written in the latter part of the nineteenth century.

The stories cover a wide range of topics from marriage and its foibles, to family problems, the disasters of war, French nationalism and gothic horror. If you've ever visited Paris, you'll recognise some of the places Maupassant mentions in the book. Also, if you like unexpected endings, you'll love these stories, especially since Maupassant is such an excellent storyteller.

The Folio Society has published this collection twice, in 1959 and 1993. Both editions are identical internally and only differ in their bindings. The 1959 version is bound in purple cloth with a black slipcase, while that of 1993 is bound in light green with a mid-green slipcase. I own the latter edition.

The collection is translated by Gerard Hopkins and has 14 full-page line drawings by Nigel Lambourne. The cloth binding is printed with a wrap-around illustrative design by Lambourne. The endpapers are plain light green, the page tops are stained green, there are 320 pages and the slipcase measures 23.5x15.5cm.

Love these stories, thanks Warwick. I have the second one too: Bed 29 and Other Stories, in a tan binding, same illustrator.

When I was last in Paris, I paid a visit to his gravesite in the Montparnasse Cemetery, among others.
