Any thoughts on Bosch taking an old case out when he was on ‘leave’ from the job? Is he coming across as a self-destructive character as Carmen Hinojos hinted at with the smoking in the first section of the book?

Self destructive is his middle name. Once he gets the itch he just goes full steam ahead.

He is the ultimate in self-destructive, hence the end of his relationship. This was another stupid action given the mess he was already in. Think Carmen worked him out quickly.

The term ‘Maverick’ has been used about Bosch, it fits him to a T.

He’s lucky he woke up when burnt by his smoking as he could have started a fire and self-destructed himself.

If I remember either in, the first or second book, he nearly burned down his house. Lots of detectives work on old cases in their spare time, so I didn't think too much about that. Some departments even encourage it, especially if the detective has a good solve record...and Harry does.

Looking to find out about his mothers murder to Harry is looking into one of the ghost that haunts him.To me it is something he must do to find some peace.

>9 Andrew-theQM: Andrew beginning to see this book more as a character study than a murder mystery. Character development for future books. Having served in the Marine Corps from 1961-1967 I find Harry’s Character similar to some of the people I served with.

>10 JohnDBurke: I can definitely see this and also to potential PTSD. This is added to with Harry by what happened to his mother and being in care. Agree, does feel very much like a character study.

He's definitely self-destructive but I think he needs to do this to keep himself connected to the job.

>7 JohnDBurke: Agree. The time he spent in physical labor with the door, and the fact that he is on leave from the constant stress of police work (especially in the years after the Rodney King riots) are allowing his mind to start healing from a lifetime of PTSD. And he's got the tools and the know-how to pull the file.
