I think he's a lonely man who can't find it in himself to be open to happiness. He wants it but doesn't know how to achieve it.

I agree with all of these comments and I feel that his war experience has added to his difficulties in connecting with people. He internalises a lot. Carmen may help here.

Yes, Harry is unhappy. He lacks fulfilment in his life - no mother, no long-term partner now Sylvia has gone, no family, not even a loving pet to keep him company.

Agree with all that has been said. Harry is unhappy and lonely and keeps himself in his deep valley by his actions and decisions.

I've always thought that Harry is his own worst enemy. Whenever he happens to get the chance to be happy, he torpedoes it in some manner.

Agree with you all feels unhappy, unfulfilled and quite an angry person, but then he cares passionately for any of life’s victims and wants justice for everyone. Also agree with Carol >7 Carol420: that he is his own worst enemy.

I don’t know if he’s so much unhappy as restless and unfulfilled. He seems to be always looking for something and never satisfied.

I agree that he is deeply unhappy, and has probably glossed over his life with his mother into "before" and "after." And the Vietnam War hasn't help. Agree with the observations that he is his own worst enemy.
