Any initial thoughts why McKittrick reacted in such a strong way to Bosch approaching him to talk about the case? Did this make him seem more or less likely to be involved in the killing?

I think Bosch just showing up after so long being retired was what made McKittrick strongly react to Bosch. He should have called on the phone first.

I think he always suspected some sort of damage control would eventually find him, and thought that was what Harry was there for.

>3 Olivermagnus: I agree that he has always felt that he was not done with this case. The fact that such senior figures had shut it down must make him fear consequences from people of power who might want to ensure his silence.

As Bosch came alone, McKittrick didn’t know which side he was coming from, it could have been the bad guys tying up loose ends (even after so long). To keep a gun handy, he has obviously lived with this worry for thirty years and more.
I didn’t think this was any sign of guilt on his part. But I do think it best for McKittrick to remain hyper-vigilant now Harry has stirred things up - at least until H solves the case and gets his man.

>3 Olivermagnus: Olivermagnus sums it up. A LA Officer showing up set off alarm bells.

I have to agree with >3 Olivermagnus:.

He was spoked and at first didn’t even think he was a police officer. I think he thought some one was there to do the cleaning up and get rid of him.

>3 Olivermagnus: I agree. It was already mentioned that McKittrick had made it difficult to locate/get in touch with him. A PO Box and an unlisted number made it more difficult to track him down

I agree with >3 Olivermagnus: and >9 bhabeck:. He’s been expecting someone to come after him.

His having a gun and always feeling this case was unfinished, and >5 Sergeirocks: yes, he is right to look over his shoulder now more than ever.
