Because he was trying to protect the LAPD. The department had just gone through a series of PR mistakes and were under tremendous scrutiny. Also, it didn't hurt that he was likely to make some politicos connected to the LAPD feel better if they didn't see their "fixer's" name in the paper in conjunction with a murder case.

I agree with everything >2 bhabeck: said.

I did have a moment when I wondered if there was more to it than protecting the department. Perhaps I just have a suspicious mind. I feel sure that he and Harry will interact further in future books.

I agree with >2 bhabeck:. But like Maura, I had a brief moment when I thought he was more involved. For a page or two, I even thought he was Marjorie’s killer. I was really upset about it, so glad I was able to discount it quickly!

He just wanted to hush everything up ensuring it didn’t harm the reputation of LAPD which already was very tarnished.

As usual, it comes down to politics.

I agree with >2 bhabeck: and also >7 bluebird_: - was Irving somehow connected with Marjorie's death??
