I'm going with 4 Stars. I enjoyed seeing the younger Bosch. I'm on hold for Desert Star, his 24th book book in the series and I believe he's 72 now. It makes me wonder if Connelly has a plan to give him a HEA. He deserves it after all these years.

I gave the book 4.5 stars...simply because of getting rid of Pounds:) Thank you Andrew and all that participated. We actually had 9 participants in this one. Sorry I was "hit & miss" on this one. Life just gets in the way sometimes as I'm sure you all know. I did finish the book and reviewed it, both on LT and Goodreads.

Thanks everyone for your kind words, at points early in the book questions were not that easy to come by as apart from the character study not a lot was going on.
I’m giving it 4.5 overall as it was a good and enjoyable read, I enjoyed finding out more about Bosch and there was a good surprise in the end s to who the killer was but for quite an obvious reason.
One pet hate of these books is his use of abbreviations and acronyms.

>4 Carol420: No problem at all Carol. Life can be busy at times and get in the way of reading. The beauty of these group reads is people can drop in and out as they want to or are able to.

I’m giving 4 stars. The start was slow and I nearly gave up. The last 2 sections were excellent though. I was not a huge fan of the series until this point. i think I needed this background information to understand him better. i think I will enjoy future books more.
FYI, I’ve lived in LA most of my life, and I love how Connelly is so true to the city. I could not find anything about the setting, etc that was not accurate. Mittel’s house exists. The street names, directions, alleys, locations are all true. As a local, it makes his books a bit more enjoyable for me…but I wonder if his descriptions of the driving routes from one location to are seen as ‘filler’ or are annoying to others.
Thanks very much Andrew! Your questions lead to an interesting discussion. i love to read everyone’s thoughts about the book. Sorry I was so late-i was unexpectedly called into work Thurs-Sat.

My grade would be 4.5. I really enjoyed the book and reading it confirmed my view that I will continue with the series. There were a few implausible moments but on the whole I found it well wrtten with some interestingly complex characters, Harry at the head of that queue. I also loved the evocation of LA,
Many thanks Andrew for your hard work in setting interesting questions and to everyone for comments that gave me a lot of insights.

>9 bluebird_: I agree - I like the LA setting and the descriptions. I went to school at USC and then lived in LA for quite a few years after. Reading Connelly’s books is like visiting some of my old haunts - 3rd St Promenade, The Pantry, Wilshire District, Hancock Park, etc. I didn’t spend much time in the Valley but the descriptions are great.
