She missed her mom but her mom had died. She used to lay out her clothes at the bottom of the bed but she didn't like the clothes her mum laid out. Her mum then cut up all her clothes that she liked. Her mum had won and she put the clothes on that her mum laid out for her. A lesson to be learned.

I wondered whether this might even be a boy? Forced to wear a gym slip would be an even bigger humiliation for a boy. The mother cut up the child’s ‘clothes’ - not specifically ‘dresses’, as I’d have expected it to say.
But as I’ve said previously, I’m becoming a more sceptical reader, perhaps I read too much into things?

What a monster that woman must have been. If the child killed the mother I'm more sympathetic now.
