Friday morning update

Books read from: I continue to slowly read Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. I am determined to finish this book. I am also slowly reading Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories by Simon Winchester and my main squeeze right now is Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time by Mark Adams for my real life book discussion group. My recorded book isPerfumist of Paris by Alka Joshi.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished reading Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz and Hell and Back by Craig Johnson. Well, actually I finished listening to them.

Book Thoughts: I am almost finished reading Turn Right at Machu Picchu and have found it to be a fun travelogue/history book. I knew the basics of the Spanish Conquest of the Inca's, but not many of the details. I am also enjoying reading about Hiram Bingham and his "explorations" and all the problems with Yale University and the repatriation of the "artifacts" Bingham found.

Non-Book activities: I am now back in Alabama and hope to be able to stay here until Memorial Day weekend. I have a retirement party to attend this afternoon and a wedding tomorrow afternoon. I also have to cook for my supper group for tomorrow. I traveled for two days this week, and have had an event everyday since I got back on Wednesday night. I hope to do nothing on Sunday but drink coffee and read.

Time reading: 1 hour
Time posting:
Food: coffee and date nut cake for breakfast.

Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 319
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 902 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon back in April of 2020.

An old friend came by yesterday afternoon and we had a lovely visit on the front porch with snacks from World Market and a nice merlot. I never quite got to my laptop after that. But, I am planning reading this weekend along with gardening. The rain arrives later today so I'll get some plants and seeds in the ground this morning and let nature do the watering.

Meanwhile, I am reading a Final Chapter, the first book in a new series for me that probably came via the freebie librarian email: Pam Stucky's Megan Montaigne series.

I am also planning to read The Trackers: A Novel by Charles Frazier. I snagged it off the Lucky Picks table at the library that features new books. You only get them for two weeks with no renewals. But that shouldn't be a problem for me.

Saturday morning update

Books read from: I continue to slowly read Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. I am determined to finish this book. I am also slowly reading Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories by Simon Winchester and my main squeeze right now is Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time by Mark Adams for my real life book discussion group. My recorded book is Perfumist of Paris by Alka Joshi.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished reading Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time by Mark Adams. Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz. Hell and Back by Craig Johnson. Both of these were recorded books.

Book Thoughts: I finished reading Turn Right at Machu Picchu at bedtime and I really enjoyed this light hearted journey through the expeditions of Hiram Bingham III. I do enjoy reading travel books of all kinds - serious and light, and this one hit the spot for me. I am sure that my book discussion group will have great fun talking about this one. I am going to start reading Cultivating Delight: A Natural History of My Garden by the natural science author Diane Ackerman. This one is not for any book group. It is just for me. I like reading gardening books.

Non-Book activities: I have been back in Alabama for two days and already the church ladies are calling me regarding my mother. I have no answers and I am not going to return until Memorial Day. Today I am cooking and have a wedding to attend late this afternoon. It has been a very crowded weekend, but tomorrow will be a day of rest. Then next week I have lots of paperwork to do, bills to pay, and will get the on-line banking straightened out. I have been trying to do on-line banking since 2009 and I simply don't understand why it is so hard. It is very simple for other people, I don't understand why my account is messed up and this is so difficult. I have a friend who retired and moved to Berlin, Germany and banks here. He does all of his banking on-line. Why can't I? Frustrating.

Time reading: 1 hour
Time posting:
Food: coffee and date nut cake for breakfast. I will be cooking Cretan Wedding Chicken - the main dish, for my supper group today. Since I don't have a printer here at home I will have to write out the recipe by hand and of course, I have to make up the grocery list and do the shopping for it. It will be fun, but lots of work.

Saturday evening:

Books read from/listened to: Final Chapter and Dreaming Spies
Non-book activities: gardening including hilling the potatoes, planting a bamboo plant and some gladiola bulbs, weeding, weeding, weeding AND when the rain came, I did some spring cleaning in the kitchen while I cooked chicken in the instant pot
Good news: Hubby was happy with snacking on last evening's charcuterie board so I didn't cook dinner; we tend to be feral feeders

Now, I am settling in with Charles Frazier and The Trackers: A Novel until bedtime.

I've had several busy weekends and lost track of the Readathons. Today has been busy, but I got in quite a bit of reading while I was waiting for Adrian at the groomer's. They close at 5, so even though I hadn't been called, I went to settle up before they closed and then waited for the groomer to finish. It was nearly 6 before he was ready. I read several chapters of Phoebe, Junior while I waited, and then finished it when we got home. That's one book finished this weekend! I would like to finish The Kindness of Enemies tomorrow.

Sunday morning: awake at 5:30 so picked up The Trackers and am now more than halfway through what is shaping into a wonderful book. Reminds me of Lincoln Highway, a story of Depression era America from shore to shore, mostly through the eyes of a WPA artist who is painting a mural at a small Oklahoma post office.

Taking a break for the Barcelona Open tennis final.

>17 nrmay: Would love the recipe for Pobre Hombre Huevos ;-)

It's a traditional Spanish dish. Sometimes I add chorizo sausage.

Spanish Poor Man´s Eggs & Potatoes
Servings 2
Author Albert Bevia @ Spain on a Fork

1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil 90 ml
3 medium sized potatoes
1 green bell pepper (or red, orange or yellow for more color!)
1 onion
4 cloves garlic (make sure it's nice & fresh)
5 eggs
handful freshly chopped parsley
sea salt & black pepper

Cut 3 potatoes (washed & patted dry) into small 1 cm (3/8 inch) thick pieces

Heat a large fry pan with a medium heat and add in 1/3 cup (90 ml) extra virgin olive oil

After heating the olive oil for 5 minutes, add the cut potatoes into the pan, mix every 3 to 4 minutes

Meanwhile, cut 1 green bell pepper into thin strips that are 5 cm (2 inches) long, thinly slice 1 onion, thinly slice 4 cloves garlic and crack 5 eggs into a bowl, season with sea salt & black pepper and lightly whisk together for just 5 to 10 seconds

After frying the potatoes for 25 minutes, they should be perfectly cooked, just pierce with a toothpick to ensure they are done, remove the potatoes from the pan and set aside

Using the same pan with the same heat, add in the sliced green bell pepper, sliced onion and sliced garlic, mix with the olive oil

After 6 to 8 minutes and the vegetables are lightly sauteed, lower the fire to a low-medium heat, add the fried potatoes back into the pan, season everything with sea salt & black pepper and mix together, then add in the whisked eggs and continue to mix everything together, cook for 3 to 4 minutes while mixing, then remove from the heat, transfer into a serving dish and sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley, serve at once, enjoy!

Sunday afternoon update

Books read from: I continue to slowly read Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. I am determined to finish this book. I am 130 pages into Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories by Simon Winchester and my recorded book is Quiet American by Graham Greene.

Books finished in this weekend's Readathon: I finished reading Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time by Mark Adams Saturday morning. Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz. Hell and Back by Craig Johnson on Friday and Saturday while driving back to Alabama. Both of these were recorded books. This afternoon I finished listening to Perfumist of Paris by Alka Joshi

Book Thoughts: I finished listening to book 3 in the Jaipur Trilogy. I enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this one was full of every cliché possible in a chick lit novel. I have not liked the main character since the first book, and even though she was the star of this novel, she didn't improve her attitude any at all. I did enjoy parts of the book so I kept listening to it. The narrator was excellent. I started listening to Quiet American. I have never read anything by Graham Greene and when I found the recorded book on CD at our public library I decided it was time to get one read.

Non-Book activities: I had a very frustrating day yesterday. I was to attend a wedding. It was the second marriage of the daughter of a close friend and I never got an invitation, so had no directions as to how to get to the venue. I thought I knew where it was and how to get there, but I drove around for 1 1/2 hours and didn't find the place. I finally quit looking and went home. Not sure what I will tell my friend when I drop off the wedding present.

Time reading: 2 hours
Time posting:
Food: my usual cappuccino from Starbucks for breakfast. I doubled the recipe for the chicken for the supper last night because there were 10 people attending and the recipe was for 6. I took two dutch ovens of roasted chicken and rice to the supper only to find out that the host had made a batch. We had chicken and rice running out of our ears. I was a bit put out as there was no need of her working that hard on the dish when she knew I was going to make it. In fact I e-mailed her and told her I was doing a double batch. She never looks at e-mail when she is home - only looks at it at work, so she says she never got the message. Sigh! I am not a chicken lover and now I have lots of left over chicken.

Books Finished: The Trackers, very good!

Non-book activities: Gardening, cooking, dog walking, a little laundry, tennis, planning for the week, really just kind of puttered all da

Food: Dinner was pork chops (spread with dijon mustard and bread crumbs and baked), roasted potatoes and fresh asparagus. Our bed is rapidly going to seed.

Now, heading to bed with At The Edge of the Orchard, which I started but then lost track of somehow. I *think* I am going to like ti.

Monday morning summary:

Books read from: Exit Strategy by Martha Wells, The Power by Naomi Alderman, Gateway by Frederik Pohl
Books finished: Exit Strategy & The Power
Pages read: 550-ish

My first weekend after a busy tax season & I indulged in quite a bit of reading. All 3 above are worthwhile reads.

Non-reading activities: Not much other than watching my Detroit Tigers finding ways to lose close games. Also completed the new Netflix thriller series The Night Agent. Verdict: It's a winner, if you like that sort of thing (I do.)

weekend wrap

Books:
Still reading The Librarian of Burned Books and
Ikenga by Nnedi Okorafor, a middle-grade fantasy for LT challenge.
In the wings - September by Rosamunde Pilcher, and Corduroy Mansions by Alexander McCall Smith.

Book related activity:
Yesterday was my shift in our small library located in the neighborhood clubhouse. Someone donated a box of books that I managed to fit on the shelves. I refreshed the Little Free Library that sits out in front of the clubhouse. And I brought home a few more books, (sigh) which I will return once I read them. Tomorrow I will pack up duplicate titles in the library and take them to the used bookstore.
7 books read so far in April.

Other activity:
My sister and BIL took us out to dinner at a really good Indian place for my birthday. (today!)
We watched the documentary film "Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It."
My nephew, on his BD, does a run of miles equal to his age! My version of that is to start walking everyday and see how soon I can complete miles to equal my age.

Weekend wrap-up

Books read from: I continue to slowly read Empires of Light: Edison, Tesla, Westinghouse, the Race to Electrify the World by Jill Jonnes. I am determined to finish this book. I more last night in Atlantic: Great Sea Battles, Heroic Discoveries, Titanic Storms, and a Vast Ocean of a Million Stories by Simon Winchester and started reading Cultivating Delight: A Natural History of My Garden by Diane Ackerman and my recorded book is now Quiet American by Graham Greene.

Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz and Hell and Back by Craig Johnson on Friday and Saturday while driving back to Alabama. Both of these were recorded books. This afternoon I finished listening to Perfumist of Paris by Alka Joshi, which I started listening to on the trip back to Alabama as well.

Book Thoughts: I need to finish some of the books I started this week. I guess since I am now retired I don't have to worry so much about how much time I spend reading.

Non-Book activities: I spent about a 1/2 hour cleaning out the flower bed in front of my house. I am going to plant easy care plants in it this summer because I have a feeling I won't be in Alabama much due to my mother's health care. Herbs, marigolds, and maybe begonias will be planted. Just to keep the house from looking like nobody is home.

Time reading: 2 hours
Time posting:
Food: take out Indian food last night.
