The Newberry Library in Chicago is having an exhibit of Pop Up Books

Though not a movie subject, I thought this would be a fun exhibit to attend!

New collections in this month's Criterion Channel:

Starring Jennifer Jason Leigh. Does not include Hateful Eight but does have Miami Blues
Mann Directs Stewart. Not just the Westerns, but Strategic Air Command
Asian American '80s. Will dip my toe, if time's available.
Directed by Seijun Suzuki. Chance to catch up on a lot of crime & oddball films from the 60s, plus interview.
Austin Film Society. Programming from the Society. Some familiar, some not, at least to me.

Meanwhile, trying to do some justice to my DVD Netflix queue before the service expires in Sept.

Effect of the writers' strike, NYT 05/02/2023:

"Late night shows, including “Saturday Night Live,” and series, like “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live!,” will probably go dark. Seth Meyers, NBC’s 12:30 a.m. host, alluded to going off the air in a web-only segment late last week, saying, “If you don’t see me here next week, know that it is something that is not done lightly, and that I will be heartbroken to miss you as well.”

During the 2007 strike, the late night hosts stayed off the air for two months. Soap operas, already an endangered genre, will run out of new episodes after a month.

If the strike is prolonged, viewers will begin to notice a dip in new TV series, though that will not become apparent until the end of the year. Reality series as well as international shows will begin playing in heavy rotation.

It will take a lengthy strike for the movie pipeline to be affected, because of the long production times. Film studios work about a year in advance; most of the movies scheduled for release this year have already been shot."

Fascinating 9-minute video about itinerant filmmaker Melton Barker, who spent 40 years traveling the country filming hundreds of versions of the same movie with casts of local children.

It's May 23, 2023, and HBOMax is now MAX. Since HBO is already part of my cable package HBOMax was always included. No longer able to access via my Samsung TV's app, but was able to access via the cable company's (Xfinity/Comcast) app section, but only after re-registering on my computer twice (didn't recognize my e-mail the first time or the Xfinity log in code had expired); I confess I'm too old to have mastered the product code scan protocol since my Android is off most of the time. Anyway, I can now log in using either the computer or the cable TV's app hub. Main reason was to see to what extent there's been content change. I assume HBO is the same, though I understand Westworld was completely zapped. Main concern was whether MAX would retain its Studio Ghibli & TCM (Turner Classic Movies) hubs. They have been retained, but may have been abridged. The hubs are now called Brands (HBO was taken over by investment bankers so big surprise), but you have to scroll down quite a bit to reach the Brands listing. Ghibli now has 2 separate Brands, one for films with English dubbing, the other for films in Japanese with subtitles, which makes it easier to use, but on first glance it appears there are fewer films. Haven't had a chance to explore TCM. They've reduced the databases to featured & A-Z; there is no longer one for International (i.e. foreign language), though I can see several at first glance. Need to explore further. Really miss the side option that allowed quick access to the non-HBO hubs. The streaming quality seemed a little off based on my test viewing of a few minutes of Spirited Away.

As an aside, having a hard time keeping up with the amount of content on the Criterion Channel; looks like they're dumping a lot of Lubitsch movies at the end of the month. Hope I can get in one or two before June.

So, I "did my research" and performed further exploration of the Max "Brands," namely the horizontal ribbon of options Max (formerly HBOMax) calls "The Brand Spotlight" and they are -- in addition to HBO, Max Original, TCM & Studio Ghibli collections -- as follows (note that I've included a brief selection of the available shows for the brand flavoring):

TLC (formerly the abbreviation for The Learning Channel). Includes Dr Pimple Popper -- One Day Fiance -- Hoarding Buried Alive -- My 600 lb life.

HGTV: Rehab Addict Rescue -- Fix My Flip -- House Hunters International -- Property Brothers -- Help! I Wrecked My House

DC. Movies & TV series based on the comic book line. Justice League -- Wonder Woman -- Shazam -- Joker -- Suicide Squad

Wizarding World. Like DC, this is a collection rather than a channel. It has the Harry Potter & Fantastic Beasts movies, plus kid related shows

Food Network. Diners Drive-ins & Dives (the channel's signature show in my opinion, masterminded by Guy Fieri) -- Chopped -- Worst Cooks in America -- Carnival Eats -- Food Paradise -- Kids Baking Competition -- What Am I Eating with Zoey Deschanel

Discovery. Deadliest Catch (commercial fishing in sketchy places; getting a lot of advertising publicity) -- Battlebots -- Dirty Jobs -- Naked and Afraid -- Naked and Afraid of Love -- This Came Out of Me -- Sewer Divers

Magnolia Network. Fixer Uppers -- Inspired Interiors -- Makeover by Monday -- Family Dinner (reality show about family dinners ) -- The Garden Chronicles

Adult Swim. Tim & Eric Awesome Show -- Aquateen Hunger Force -- Mr Pickles -- The Boondocks -- Rick & Morty -- Robot Chicken = Check it Out with Dr Steve (who is John C. Reilly)

Kids & Family. Another collection of children's programming from the various brands

Sesame Workshop. Back seasons of Sesame Street -- Mecha Builders -- My Sesame Street Friends

Travel Channel (or as the brand logo has it: TvL). Alien Encounters -- Ghost Hunters -- UFO Witness -- These Woods Are Haunted -- Alaskan Killer Bigfoot -- Amish Haunting -- Alien Abductions (of various folks) -- Ghost Asylum

ID (abbreviation for Investigations Discovery). Jared from Subway -- See No Evil -- I (Almost) Got Away With It -- The New York Post Reports -- The Perfect Murder -- Deadly Women -- Queen of Meth -- Diabolical -- Fatal Vows (I think this one is about bad marriages)

CNN. Anthony Bourdain: parts unknown -- The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper -- Stanley Tucci: searching for Italy (I enjoyed this one when it first came out; it's a foodie show) -- The Windsors (the royal family; one of them recently became a king in England) -- This Is Life with Lisa Ling (she's the cousin of one of my distant in-laws, so I keep meaning to take a look) -- History of the Sitcom -- The Hunt with John Walsh -- Pope: the most powerful man in history.

Given the plethora of content it's important to create a personal list of favs so Max's investment guys can monitor your tastes & spam your mail accordingly. Also, Max has quite a few BBC nature documentaries, but there's no brand box for them. You need to scroll down past the 31 suggestion ribbons to the very bottom, where you will find the genre ribbon. You then need to click past 16 genres to the Science and Nature box. You're welcome.
