Mom's doing really good, she's a lot more aware than she was just a few days ago. She's mouthing responses to the nurses and us. She really wishes that they'll take the tube out of her throat soon so she can talk.

>2 SilverWolf28: Good to hear that news!
I am joining this weekend- I have to decide on my next book- the one that I am reading now ( a Giller Prize finalist) is not interesting to me.

>2 SilverWolf28: I am so glad to hear that your mother is doing well, Silver.
Unfortunately, I will be unable to participate this weekend. Too much going on at Dad's - our last weekend there, fingers crossed.
I hope everyone has a good time with their reads! Make them all 5 stars!!

I am signing on as we are mostly home this weekend and I have made very good progress on work for the fall semester so can afford a couple days of reading along with making tomato sauce and pear jam from the garden bounty.

>2 SilverWolf28: good news, am happy for both of you!
I'm going to try to read this weekend. I had to take both of my pets to the vet yesterday, was too tired to read before bed. Today will be about catching up on chores and errands, but I only have one story to read in Monument Rock, so maybe?

Saturday afternoon:
Books read from: Firefly Summer by Maeve Binchy and my current audio book, By Its Cover
Books finished: Murder in the Book Lover's Loft by Ellery Adams
Thoughts: Ellery Adams is one of the few cozy mystery writers I keep up with. This book is part of the Book Retreat series, and she has, in the last couple books, pulled in a character from another series that she ended, Books By the Bay. In this case, the book used both settings--Storyton Hall and Oyster Bay--for the story. I love slipping into the wonderful world Adams has created around the book themed inn with its history and mystery and its small town friendliness and charm. This book had me wondering if Adams is ending this series as well and a post on Good Reads confirms that she is focusing on the Secret Book and Scone Society series.
Non book activities: I canned four pints of pear jam last night and picked a basketful today to make more. We have six pear trees and all of them fruited well this year. I have tomatoes in the crockpot for sauce to go in the freezer. We are going to head out to some property we own for a bit of fishing and maybe some kayaking this evening. Or I may just read on the dock.

Books read from: Braving the Wilderness by Brené Brown; Maximum city by Suketu Mehta
Books finished: This is not a Book by Michael Picard
Time reading: 4 hours
Time posting: Saturday evening
Snacks: popcorn
Thoughts: I really enjoyed the first part Picard's book; then it goes into logic and mathematics - while I understand the relevance, I lost interest.
Non-book activities: house work, catching up with friends, hiking and participating in the Nature Conservancy BioBlitz initiative, a grassroots effort to identify the fauna and flora throughout the world.

Sunday evening checkin:
Books finished: Firefly Summer by Maeve Binchy
Books read from: Fearless Jones by Walter Moseley
Thoughts: I enjoyed the Maeve Binchy. She captured the spirit of young people in this book and included a couple shocking twists.
Nonbook activities: I worked on my portfolio for University of Richmond. I am an adjunct but after seven semesters you can get a promotion and a small raise. I also made tomato sauce from my garden tomatoes and read by the pool for awhile.

Weekend Roundup
Books read from: Annette Vallon by James Tipton. Fool's Tale by Nicole Galland I am listening to All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot.
Books finished in this weekend's: Great Santini by Pat Conroy
Book Thoughts: I haven't done much reading this weekend as I spent most of my time taking care of my mother and attending the county fair.
Non-Book activities: The county Fair was great fun. The polka band leader and national celebrity Molly Bee was the headliner for the entertainment and she was GREAT! Polka is such fun music. It is impossible to be down and sad when polka is playing. Molly Bee is a very good entertainer and the crowd loved her and her band.
I also had adventures with my mother. She has a reoccurrence of Shingles and was in so much pain Tuesday night that I took her to the emergency room. She is back at home but is doped up with a opioid sedative, but she is feeling better - when she isn't sleeping.
Time reading:
Time posting:
Food: hot dogs, corn dogs, soft serve ice cream from the FFA stand. Cheeseburgers from the 4-H stand, and a new fried food called Elephant Ears.
Total books finished since the Read-A-Thon Began: 340
Total Time Reading since the Social Distancing read-a-thon began: 984 hours since I started doing the weekend Read-A-Thon back in April of 2020

>15 benitastrnad: Sorry to hear about your mom. I was a little jealous of the fair: we had a fair like that in the village where I grew up and it was so fun! I need a candy apple right now!
>16 Cecilturtle: I participated in early BioBlitz's as part of a grant I worked on. We did them with groups of middle school students. And lots of other Sunday fun ;-)

Well, I finally got a book read, finished it under the wire last night!

Monument Rock by Louis L'Amour
This collection contains the last of L'Amour's unpublished short stories, and it's a pretty good bunch. There are some familiar characters within, including Utah Blane, the Cactus Kid, Chick Bowdrie, Kilkenny, and it even has a new Talon family member. I can't recall any of these tales not being at least a three star. Not going to rehome this one, yet.
This year I am trying to read/reread every L'Amour that I've not reviewed here on LT. Monument Rock was the most recent.
>20 nrmay: hope you feel better soon. I started taking supplements shortly after I got Covid in June 2021, have been feeling SO much better. When I got Omicron it was only 24 hours of sniffles.
