They witnessed, and it was relayed about, the dire conditions in North Korea. Is the world’s approach to North Korea vindicated? Is there another approach other than sanctions that could be used?

I think sanctions have not pressured North Korea in any way. The only people who suffer are regular citizens. The elite will always have whatever they want.

>2 Olivermagnus: Well said! Totally agree. North Koren doesn't work or play well with others, nor do they have any desire to do so.

Exactly. It’s so sad to watch, but I don’t think there is a good answer. Sanctions and humanitarian aid as able are our only real tools. If our value system is that each country has autonomy over itself, we are stuck. We (or another country) should not be the World’s Police Force. Cannot force others to change to what we think is right way…even though I really want to. How can leaders be so power-hungry that they let their countrymen suffer?

>4 bluebird_: I think you hit the nail on the head with the word "power"...or the conceived idea of it.

It’s definitely a difficult question as the world tried to slow their development and use of long range nuclear weapons. Don’t really have any other options that I can see, but it is the everyday citizen that ends suffering and starving to death. What a world we live in. Power corrupts!

The latest news of the summit between North Korean and Russian leaders certainly does not ease the situation. The West will be watching developments carefully.

TBH, I don’t think poking our noses into other countries’ businesses does any good. ‘We’ can’t save the world, even if as bluebird says (>4 bluebird_:) we “really want to”.
All I pray for these days is that some nutter doesn’t press ‘That’ Button.

>10 Andrew-theQM: It seems that people everywhere are not as concerned about what they say or who they say it to, as they used to be...which can quickly lead to doom and gloom.

A terrible situation rogue state without concern for the people refusing outside aid with leadership that has no sense of reality. Their only hope is revolution, which is practically impossible due to it being a vicious police state. China is the only country that could bring about change and I cannot see that happening.

It seems like a tough situation in order to do anything. I agree with >12 JohnDBurke:
