Could Seichan have done anything differently that might have saved Rachel? Were you surprised that she was killed?

Initially I was surprised she was killed, but upon reflection I see it was inevitable. There was nothing Seichan could have done to stop it. Pak would have come up with a reason to kill her no matter what happened (I disagree about the coin, I suspect he’d have come up with a different excuse to kill her if the coin was tails…but that couldn’t have happened or the ending of the book would have had to be different)

They were hinting to Vigor that something bad was going to happen. Seichan only had one move while the gun was at Rachel’s head.

No, Pak is a mudering SOB, nothing could be done to save her.
Knew something tragic was going to happen to Rachel because of the predicted suffering of Vigor by the Elder.

I was surprised at first but it makes sense to eliminate characters that having taken a back seat over the series. With Vigor's illness and Rachel no longer a love interest of Gray, it started to make more sense.

I was very surprised as I had surmised Rachel to be a major character in the series and was expecting her to turn up in subsequent books.

Not really surprised, someone was going to die and I pegged Rachel for dramatic effect. Sometimes I think too much reading has made me a bit jaded. But then I think: "There's no such thing as too much reading."
