Let's be honest a lot of what we have learned from the past came to us that way. So it would be a little hypocritical to be hyper annoyed at the practice when done respectfully and with discipline.

I think if it's done in the spirit of science and education it is fine. If it's being done to collect treasure and toss the bones it's not okay.

Anthropology expands our knowledge of the past,
“What is past is prologue.” Ruth has the proper perspective, respect for the bones as they were living people.

I agree with others, this is how we have expanded our knowledge. I can go with it providing the bones are respected and buried respectfully at the end of the process.

Agree with you all. I love archaeology. It does feel a bit weird to dig up someone’s past and their bones. But if done with good methodology and respect, it’s invaluable to science and gives honor to those who came before us.

I think I’m in the ‘let them remain at peace’ camp. And definitely don’t display the bones in museums…

>8 Sergeirocks: Totally agree about not showing the bones in museums.

I agree with everyone here. There is a lot to be learned from digging up burial sites about the people from humanity's past, as long as it's done with science in mind. And agreed - keep the bones buried where they are!
Interestingly, the Smithsonian is currently working with different Native American tribes to return the bones to their proper locations for proper burial.

>11 threadnsong: that’s great! So glad the Smithsonian is working on returning the bones!
