Do you think that the name Night Hawks, predisposes people to think badly of them? Is the name a fair reflection of who they are?
2Olivermagnus
I don't know why they would be perceived badly. Some people approve of their activities and some think they are disrupting archeological sites. If they like to go out at night with their metal detectors I think that's fine.
3EadieB
It depends on who you are. I can see why Ruth would think badly of them as she is into archaeology but most people would say that they go out at night and mostly have fun.

Too many people judge by name or group, you can only judge by the individual.

>4 JohnDBurke: Wholeheartedly agree, actions not words.

I’m with Eadie (>3 EadieB:), most laypeople wouldn’t know what nighthawking means. I wouldn’t have known the term prior to this book.

>6 Sergeirocks: Ageeed.

You are judged by the group name you go by. We can dispute the merits of doing so til the cows come home but we all do it to some extent. None of us would want to be in a dark alley at midnight with the Kill-Murderers even if they told us the were just a Doo-Wop group. I'm just saying. And yes I do believe their name may not be a true reflection of who they are but hey also knew what the name meant for many.

>8 ColinMichaelFelix: 😂 A good example.

They picked a name that has a bad rep with archaeologists, so they shouldn’t be surprised if they are thought of well. I understand their reasons for choosing the name, but think it’s a disservice to them if they want to be taken seriously. Nothing wrong with going out at night hunting for artifacts, but choose a name that isn’t associated with thieves and scoundrals!

I agree. Reading more about them in this chapter, it seems like Night Hawks = Grave Robbers. Maybe they want to make a change in how the name is perceived.
