What did you make of Paul Noakes? His father was described as a strong character, what do you think that means?

Paul seemed a bit timid. I thought he might have have equated "strong" with disciplinarian and abuser.

I thought of Paul Noakes as a person who has a strong father meaning that he is very opinionated and can be forceful at times. Not always getting along with his father.

As >2 Olivermagnus: said "timid" He grew up under a domineering and cruel father.

Something a bit strange about him, but feel mulch of this was explained later on by the abuse he suffered from his father, whether they be mental/emotional or physical. Strong character for me also inferred a domineering and abusive father which we found out later on was the case.

I assumed he meant his dad was a bit of a bully. It would certainly explain Paul’s apparent timidity.

As suggested I think its euphemism for being a bully. Probably both psychological and physical.

Agree with >6 Sergeirocks: and >7 ColinMichaelFelix:. ‘Kind’ way of saying he was a bully. I’m with Andrew—there is something a bit ‘off’ with Paul, but it’s not fully explained by his background. Will see where it leads.

I'm can certainly understand Paul's timidity from what he suffered from his abusive father. I also wonder if he is hiding something behind his timid demeanor.
