I could really use another hint for #5. I'm not very good at famous people.

Born in India. Is the subject of a fatwa against him and his works, pronounced by Ayatollah Khomeini. The attack left him with only one eye.

He's now British-American. He won the Booker Prize in 1981 (Not that I knew this; I Googled for his details).

This should really give it away: the fatwah was issued after he wrote The Satanic Verses.
