... just discriminating, but it is indeed hard to discriminate without appearing to be a snob. Finding like minded book lovers is like looking for one small book in a vast library, or a needle etc etc. Maybe there will be a connection here........

Ah, well, what's a little snobbery between friends?
I suspect Ian chose a name for this group that was deliberately provocative and annoying for a certain segment of readers/people, but I wouldn't want to presume.
"Snob" or "elitist" suits me just fine--indeed, I've been called both.
I wear those titles as a badge of honor.
No apologies.

It's one of those irregular verbs:
I have good taste.
You have discrimination.
They are snobs.
I have good taste.
You have discrimination.
They are snobs.

>2 CliffBurns: I am absolutely in your camp. But more proud of being elitist than snob. To me elitist may imply that you might have some justification in being so, whereas snob is inexcusable. I think that in English English snob is more disparaging than in American English. I like to think that having divided my life evenly between the two continents, I am fluent in both. Being married to an American wife we still come up with subtle nuances that need to be translated.

I've been a member here for awhile, and I can say that nobody is shy with their opinions but I haven't witnessed any kind of one-upmanship. So this brand of 'snobbishness' is fine by me.

Would "one-upmanship" be considered a silly or childish pursuit in this instance? If so, might that then be considered "snobfoolery"?
And incidentally, I'm also with Cliff (and scunliffe). Being considered a snob or elitist when it comes to my literary proclivities is just fine with me.

For the record, I created this group, with Cliff's help, after being repeatedly attacked for wanting sf books to be well-written in a LT sf group. I read a lot outside sf but the title was intended to be slightly tongue-in-cheek. It's always amused me that since I created it, this group has been one of the most active groups on LT. I've also been heartened by the fact none of the discussions here have ever turned nasty. Heated on occasion, perhaps, although never that much, and never as nasty as you often see in other fora or social media. Something to be proud of, I guess.

>7 iansales: Oh, sure, apportion some of the blame to me too.
I consider this group entirely of your creation and have been merely bumming a ride, right from the beginning.
