Lore
No one truly knows how the world of Athoria came into existence, though many religions attempt to answer that question. Whatever the answer is, it became a prosperous little world, on a planet only with the surface area of what would be a single continent on earth.
A man, glad to seize a time of peace and happiness, took over. His name was Dolion.
But he was better known as The Tyrant King.
For three hundred years, he orchestrated civil wars, bringing pain, poverty, and despair to his people. And yet he watched cruelly, somehow happy to watch the pain and suffering, until he was assassinated. Now the world, broken and divided up into sections by whatever aristocrats were left alive, is yours to experience.
To the humans: there are only small towns scattered about; Devuniake, the land of the demons; the two main Kingdoms, Ceraun (Ruled by Queen Laverna) and Floudin, ruled by King Ryder; and the uncharted territories yet to be explored (one of the main sources of intellect… and death).
But to the other creatures, there is so much more. A vast land of strewn-about territories, where most species are safe.

SPECIES:
Werewolves despise vampires, and like elves are very territorial. They are similar to humans, but with one anomaly: the ability to shift into a wolf. Their human form is usually more strong than delicate, a side effect of running as a wolf. Codeword is ‘wolf’, hide it in a sentence. They like to travel in groups. They are dangerous but can be loyal. Sometimes, a werewolf will bite a human. After a period of existential pain, that person will then transform into a werewolf themselves.

In Athoria, elves are tribal creatures that are possessive and guarded. They are untrusting of most and are very perceptive. Some elves can sense things such as feelings and fears, and rarely thoughts. Codeword is ‘untrusting’, hide it in a sentence. Most elves are tall, with pointed ears and sharp features. They prefer to keep their hair longer.

Fae are small, humanoid creatures that live in the heart of the “Uncharted Areas,” as the humans like to call them. The tallest is around two feet, the shortest being only a couple of inches, sometimes with feathery wings. Codeword is ‘insane’, hide it in a sentence. They pride themselves on driving passersby to the brink of insanity unless they are curious about something. But usually, if a human stumbles across them and escapes, it will be without their sanity.

Vampires - bluntly speaking, vampires are the immortal undead. Vampires are stunning creatures. They tend to avoid most other species but will feed on humans and rogue elves - mainly for sport, as they don't technically need to eat. Codeword is ‘blood’, use it in a sentence. Vampires are made, not born, by another vampire biting them. More civilized vampires will commonly stop to chat with other species. All vampires are gifted with powers, though; more like enhanced abilities. They are sometimes gifted with the ability to run at incredible speeds; draw other species in using their minds; sense thoughts and emotions; have incredible strength; and more. Most vampires also tend to be arrogant, thinking they are unkillable.
Notes:
Vampires are NOT unkillable. They can be destroyed by long-term exposure to fire.
Vampires cannot stand up to weapons. As long as the blade is very, very sharp, it will be able to (with effort) cut through the skin of a vampire.
- Vampires have nothing to do with bats.
- This world has only existed for about four thousand years.
- Vampires should not be older than 3,500 or so.

Humans are the creatures who populate the Kingdoms. They are much more orderly than other species - and also much more resilient. For years they have built up tall walls - being one of the last creatures on the food chain, they refuse to die off. Codeword is ‘resilient’, hide it in a sentence. They are known for, while being powerless, killing most other creatures with weapons. Of course, not all humans are bad, but they have their reputations among other species, despite being much less deadly.

Centaurs are majestic creatures. Codeword is ‘majestic’, hide it in a sentence. They are usually half human, half horse, but anomalies show up from time to time - sometimes it will be partly human but the other half will be a snake, deer, a fish (wait…), or any other creature you could imagine. Centaurs are known for being travelers and adventurers, and one of the most amiable species in Athoria.
Bio:Name//Age//Gender and Pronouns//Sexual Orientation (opt.)//Physical Description//Personality (two good traits; two bad; two neutral//Backstory (opt.) // Strength(s) //Weakness(es)//Codeword//Other
Rare creatures, half-bloods are the spawn of two different species. They are uncommon and often shunned for what they are. Codeword is ‘trouble’, hide it in a sentence. Normally, depending on the two species, their powers will either be diluted, one dominant, or powerful, though they often have a hard time reigning their powers in.
Common questions:
- Can my character's mother be a vampire?
No - since vampires are technically dead, only the father can be a vampire; a vampire mother cannot birth children.
- Can my creature have wings?
Only if their parent is a harpy or some other winged creature.
- Can my creature be a mix of something and a human and still have strong powers?
NO. If your creature is mixed with a human, the powers will be diluted.

Sirens, beings who populate the waters of Athoria, are creatures who are known to be tricksters. This is not all true, though; many sirens tend to be very sweet. Of course, there are a few who still revert to the old days of singing to drown humans. Codeword is ‘song’, hide it in a sentence. They are delicate creatures, with webbed fingers, a scaled tail, and white hair. Most sirens are just able to control water, but some can draw creatures in with their song, and others can shapeshift their tail into legs for short amounts of time.
Notes:
- Sirens feed on fish, sometimes humans (depending on the siren), and those who can go to shore like apples.
- There are no current siren royalty, though you can ask.

Demons are humanoid creatures that inhabit the land of Devuniake. Most are vicious creatures, prone to brutally killing anyone who steps foot within their borders. Codeword is 'Flame', hide it in a sentence. They are of varied heights and appearances, but you will know when a creature is a demon based on the glowing red eyes they all share. Some will have wings, horns, or tails, and many will have powers normally relating to fire.
Notes:
- Demons cannot speak with the dead, shapeshift, regenerate, or anything of the sort. Their powers ONLY relate to FIRE.
- Demons are not known to attack unprovoked.
- Demons cannot use their wings to fly - they can only hover or slow a fall, kind of like a chicken.
- demons are humanoids. They could pass as a human, as the image implies, except for their red eyes and potential wings, horns, or tails.

Satyrs, creatures as calm and friendly as centaurs, love to stay at the very borders of the Uncharted Areas, some even taking up the job of guiding visitors through unknown lands. They commonly have magical abilities relating to the earth, and are not often attacked despite them being one of the most vulnerable creatures in Athoria; their only worry is vampires, who find them easiest to feed from. Codeword is ‘earth’, hide it in a sentence. They are often very knowledgeable of Athoria’s history and a huge help to those seeking knowledge.

Although usually invisible, a kobold can materialize in the form of a non-human animal, a fire, a human, or a candle. Kobolds often like to materialize as humanlike figures the size of small children, or humanlike animals. Kobolds commonly live in one of three places, with matching personalities: household spirits of ambivalent nature - they sometimes perform domestic chores or like to play malicious tricks; other Kobolds haunt underground places, such as mines; the third tends to live aboard ships and help sailors, sometimes siding with creatures of the water, like sirens. Codeword is ‘Shapeshifter’, hide it in a sentence. Some will have minor magical abilities, such as moving small objects or speaking with animals.

Mages (occupation): Mages are humans who have learned to connect to the Dark Arts, magic that does not come from the earth but instead comes from a cost: your soul. Codeword is ‘soul’, hide it in a sentence. For mages, everyday spells (e.g. a spell enabling a brush to sweep for you) will not harm, but bigger spells (e.g. possession) will chip off little pieces of a mage’s soul. When a mage has no soul left, they go missing. No one knows where, but many rumors King Ryder hid them away to be used in battle as mindless puppets.
Bio: Name//Age//Gender and Pronouns//Sexual Orientation (opt.)//Physical Description//Personality (two good traits; two bad; two neutral//Backstory (opt.)//How strong of a mage are they?//How many years of practice? // Strength(s) // Weakness(es) // Codeword//Other
During a full moon, the dolphins of the Azuria River would shape-shift into stunning humanoid beings dressed in white, with a hat covering the fin jutting out from their head. Codeword is ‘Fin’, use it in a sentence. Encante also has been known to lure children into the rivers to take them away into the underwater cities. It is unknown, though, to most creatures, if these beings are just stories told to scare children… or if these creatures truly are real.

Harpies - half human, half bird - are intelligent creatures, though very unorganized ones at that. Codeword is ‘feather’, hide it in a sentence. They have no powers but tend to be charming and friendly. Sadly, they are commonly hunted by humans brave enough to travel into uncharted lands. They will fly around, and are solitary; they have no set home.

Gorgons are quite different from many other species in Athoria - they tend to seclude themselves and are also one of the only solitary creatures on the planet. Codeword is ‘stone’, hide it in a sentence. They are reputed for being able to turn others to stone using their eyes, so more civilized Gorgons will wear bandanas over their eyes - they can see through, but others can’t see them. They do this because their eyes can turn other creatures into stone. They have snakes for hair and glowing purple eyes.

Settings:
The Forum: Both a popular marketplace and a major public square, people come from far and wide to exchange conversations, buy wares, perform, and share memories. The forum, located just outside the uncharted areas, in Ceraun, is a unique place that brings in most species in a time of peace.
The Kingdom of Flouder: Flouder is a human kingdom ruled by King Ryder, and is home to the world-renowned Sandwood Tavern. Flouder is located in the southernmost part of Athoria. It is known for its cloudy but warm climate and amazing architecture. King Ryder is adamant about inhuman species not coming within his borders, the Sandwood Tavern being an exception as going against that would most likely cause his assassination or an outright civil war.
The Uncharted Areas: The Uncharted Areas are the forests inhabited by most other creatures that are not humans. They are rich with life and experiences, the reason why many adventuring human cartographers explore there. From Gorgons to Satyrs to even Werewolves, this is an amazing place filled with vegetation, beautiful sights, and beautiful creatures.
The Shadowed Market: The Shadowed Market, a place nestled between Flouder and Ceraun, is home to a (technically illegal) market selling wares that vary from vampire fangs and fairy wings to fruit and maps. The market is known but not spoken of and is a sanctuary to creatures of any species, gender, sexual orientation, religion, color, food need, or powers (if any).
The Ceraunian Temple: The Ceraunian temple, named after the human kingdom it resides in, is a place for all to pray and worship the dead. It is known far and wide and has a reputation of prayers being answered by the gods (or god, according to some species). The floor is made up of a stone supposedly having been there since the birth of Athoria, the walls of enchanted brick.
Sandwood Tavern: Located in Flouder, Sandwood Tavern is by far the most popular tavern in all of Athoria. Having a strict only-humans policy, many other creatures will often disguise themselves to join in on the laughter and drinking, no matter the risk. The Tavern has been known for its amazing wine.
Elven Camps: The Elven camps move a lot; most Elven tribes are nomadic. Normally they are kept in small sites, to not arouse attention; and when coming across another elven tribe, they will commonly form a whole group. After the evening meal, every elf will gather around the fire and nominated elves will sing, tell stories of their tribe, or partake in religious or supposedly magical rituals and dances.
The Kingdom of Ceraun: The human Kingdom ruled by Queen Laverna. They are known for their cooler winters and summers, and their wines. Ceraunians like to focus on their studies and are quite intelligent. Many of the citizens do not like Floudin’s citizens but tolerate them. The present royalty, Queen Laverna, is not quite as adamant as King Ryder when it comes to different species within her borders.
Devuniake: Devuniake, the residing place for demons, is a barren, desertlike place. It is known for its lack of vegetation and its dangerous citizens. It has many stalagmite-like geographical structures covering its surface. Few animals besides rabbits live there, and most eventually become meals for the demons.
Lacus Mors: Lacus Mors, translating to, "The lake of death", is a lake near Devuniake that always seems to be covered in a thick fog, no matter the weather. You can see Ceramics’s castle looming ahead. Many sirens live there, and bodies mysteriously appear on the sandy floor of the lake - not even the sirens have any idea why and how they appeared. Many believe that the lake is a living entity, and will pray or sacrifice gifts to the lake.
Azuria River: Azuria River, a River known for its iridescent teal waters, runs through both Flouder and Ceraun before waterfalling into Lacus Mors. Its water is pure, pure enough to drink from, and has been that way since The Beginning. King Ryder, slowly becoming a copy of the Tyrant King, is terrified that their water access will be cut off someday through war.
The Society: The Society, a secret group hidden from the public, was founded by Alexander Beauséjour. It consisted of many creatures, about two hundred in all. They are known for “keeping the peace”, better described as assassinating anyone who doesn’t fit their standards. After Alex retired, his recently-turned-immortal (vampire) daughter, Irene Beauséjour, ran the group. After she left, they became riled up, unable to choose a leader. They are planning on killing Queen Laverna, although they have not gotten past plans within ten years.
