"I used to think the top global environmental problems were biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that with 30 years of good science we could address these problems. But I was wrong. The top environmental problems are selfishness, greed and apathy, and to deal with these we need a spiritual and cultural transformation, and we scientists don't know how to do that."

"People ask me what to do and I always say, 'Blow the bridges'".
Thomas Berry in Befriending the Earth: A Theology of Reconciliation Between Humans and the Earth, Mystic, CT: 23rd Publications, 1991, p 112.
A dramatic quote from a priest who was a leading figure in what Catholics call "creation spirituality", the religious engagement with the environment. Berry is not actually advocating violence, but he believed that as far as possible we should aspire to be self-sufficient and sustainable within our own bioregions, and that our current model of transporting food and commodities from distant regions is unsustainable. Of course there needs to be interaction between different regions, as none can be completely self-sufficient in isolation from the world at large, but he believed that the current model is unbalanced and far from sustainable.
