Do you think Mussolini deserved his end? Was there any way he could have saved himself?
2Olivermagnus
His death was inevitable once Germany lost the war.

I agree with >2 Olivermagnus:. He was a dead man walking, and he wasn't exactly going to win "Man of The Year".

I can see why the partisans wanted their revenge against the man, but he should really have been handed over to the allied forces for trial as a war criminal.
I don’t believe there was any way he could redeem himself. But he might have saved himself this ignominious end if he’d held himself accountable and surrendered to the allies, instead of attempting a cowardly escape. Then again, he was hardly alone in this respect; half the German Nazi regime either slunk away, or attempted to.
I Googled Mussolini after reading the prologue, (it’s usually the first port of call after Berry’s introductions, 🙂), and the photo of what they did with the bodies of M and his mistress I found shocking. I understand why the feelings of the populace would run high, but what was done with his body was simply feeding the hysteria.

He was a Fascist Dictator responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity. I can understand his execution by the partisans, but like >4 Sergeirocks: the desecration of his and his mistress body in Milan was beyond the pale. The hatred of the Italian People toward him must have been great.

>4 Sergeirocks: >5 JohnDBurke: I agree with John and Sergei, you can understand people seeking to take revenge, but that level of desecration is never acceptable, and makes them as bad as him.
Like Sergei I think he should have been tried as a war criminal. So many people escaped at the end of the war and loved life in South American countries or elsewhere.

It’s not surprising he was killed by the partisans-and I think he deserved to be killed. But it should have been after a trial for war crimes. I do not think there was any way he could have saved himself.

I agree also with Sergei (and I took a peek at the Google machine) and was shocked to see the photos of Mussolini and Clara. He had done many bad things to the people of Italy and if he didn't surrender to the Allies, he was certainly going to be killed. Especially sneaking off like a coward.
