Any, thoughts on the ransacked house, the body and the bear that Cotton encountered in chapter one? What did you think was going on?

I thought the bear was a hilarious addition to the story. At first I thought the house had been ransacked by humans.

There was a search for the Churchill/Mussolini letters through out the house.There was a bear roaming the house looking for food. The body of one of the searchers was shot. Malone had to go out a window to escape the bear.

I agree with both >2 Olivermagnus: and >3 EadieB:. The bear did give the story a flavor of comedy. Besides...I was rooting for the bear.

I agree with all that has been said about the comic relief of the bear,
but wondering if the bear is a symbol of someone or group appearing later in the story.

I also initially thought the house was ransacked by people. Loved the bear, but something feels off. Why would a bear climb a flight of stairs and rummage through the exact room where the satchel was stashed. There was no food up there. And it seems might quickly for a bear to wander into the house so soon after the men left the house. Maybe a third party was directing the bear by remote control? Lol.

The Bear was very much a surprise addition, not sure I fancy facing a gun toting bear! 🤣 >5 Sergeirocks:. The bear must surely be connected somehow. Too much of a coincidence that a bear roaming through a house around the time the house was ransacked and someone killed. >7 bluebird_:.

Cotton was definitely beaten to the punch.

I thought the bear was a nice addition (and I hope the parrot got out safely, too!) as it added something other than "Cotton finds someone with a gun."

But I don't know whether it was an inside job for the body and the ransacked house, or someone outside paying attention to Cotton's/MI6's calls who made it to the house first.
