‘It is not necessary to believe in God to be a good person’. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?
2EadieB
Not necessarily. There are good people who feed the poor and do good deeds but may not believe in God.
3Olivermagnus
I don't think belief in God has anything at all to do with being a good person.
4Carol420
Absolutely not. The concept of God may make those that believe strife to be a better person...but I have met a lot of people who say they believe in God but aren't going to win any '"Citizen of the Year" awards.

It has been my experience in life we a re all flawed and some flawed are honest, caring people trying to help others and make the world a better place and other flawed people who are just the opposite.
To those of faith, a paraphrase from the Book of James, Show your faith in acts of kindness not in words only, and I will add, thank those that do good to others no matter who they are.

I agree with the statement. Each person has their own innate belief and value system that drives their actions and behaviors. Outside forces, including a belief in God or following a religion can have an impact. However good deeds (or evil ones) can be done regardless of a belief in God.

How a person lives their life isn’t necessarily tied to a particular religion or God, belief in God doesn’t always lead to being a good person and leading a good life. Many claim themselves to be good Christians and act against Christian principles and are far from good people, and vice versa. It’s everyone’s moral and ethical compass that dictates this, and this is often influence by a person’s religion.

>1 Andrew-theQM: I agree with that statement. ‘Good’ is what you do, how you behave, not what deity you may or may not believe in.
As said, much evil is, and always has been, done in the name of religion.

Agree with this quote and glad that it is in this book. And also agree with >8 Sergeirocks:: those who kill in the name of their religion are, in a sense, "Godless." There are a great many good people who do good in the world, who do not subscribe? ascribe? to a particular diety.
