Is it a surprise hearing about the corruption at the head of the Catholic Church? Why do you think this has happened? Why do you think it isn’t rooted out?

The Church is an institution made up of powerful men and where there is power there will always be corruption. Pope John Paul 1 was pope for for 33 days. He went to bed and died in his sleep. There was never an autopsy as it is against Church Law to autopsy a pope.
He was a reformer who apologized for Catholic sins against women, Jews and other religious minorities.
It was also rumored, not proven, he had plans to look into a connection between the Vatican Bank and the Mafia.
Conspiracy Theories still surround this 33 day Papacy.

The corruption in the Catholic Church has been happening for years. Pope John Paul I was bound and determined to clean up the Vatican but he was pronounced dead after 33 days probably a victim of an assassination.

The larger the institution and the longer it exists, the more corruption develops. Not at all surprised to hear of this type of corruption in the Catholic Church. And I have read a bit about the theories re: Pope John Paul I’s early death.

It’s hard to root our long-standing corruption in any entity. The best way is for ‘term limits’ or faster turn-over people in leadership. However this is not a good solution either as institutional knowledge and continuity is also important for the entity to thrive.

I think the Catholic Church has been rooted in corruption since the beginning. You can't combine that kind of money and power and not fall prey to its corrupting influence.

As John has said >2 JohnDBurke: Power corrupts, especially absolute power. So many rumours around the Vatican Bank. Strong rumours and suspicions re deaths of John Paul I and Pius XI (1939). It appears rock the boat and the corruption and Pope or not you put yourself in a fatal game.

I agree with all of you. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

And I still remember hearing about Pope John Paul I's vote into the papacy and his sudden death. Intrigue and rumors have always surrounded it.

I'm not surprised to hear about all the corruption in the Vatican, and I would also not be surprised to learn if this list is true. Or as close to the truth as Berry could get.

It’s rather appealing to think this could occur among so-called ‘religious’ men.
