Do you think religion was used as a way to control the masses?

Yes the Catholic Church would lie and make up stuff to try to keep the Catholic faith alive for the masses.

I think religion is used to keep poor people controlled. As long as they are told they are going off to a fabulous afterlife they will accept poverty, slavery, etc.

Yes, religion definitely was a way to control ‘the masses’. But I think that can be said of governments and other organizations too. Just need power, a ‘hook’ and people willing to believe and follow. Easier for religion because of it’s longstanding history, so it’s well entrenched in the fabric of the community.

Yes, agree that religion is used to control the masses. And the bigger the religion, the more it is used for that purpose and less for touching the realm of spirit.
