What did you think the church would do with Constantine’s Gift? Were they right to destroy it?

Best move, I think. Why bring that kind of trouble if they could avoid it.

It had value as an historical document. I feel it could have been kept, if at all possible to do it in safety, (that sort of info getting out in the present day would be a landmine, as discussed in a previous question). Perhaps, in some distant future, it could have been held up as a salutary lesson, the premise being that lessons are to be learned from history.
I’m not sure it was Cardinal Stamm’s decision to make to burn it. But the Church would have suppressed it, one way or the other.

It had to be destroyed. It’d be a ticking time bomb if left intact. There would always be a risk of someone trying to use it for their own gain, no matter how few people knew of it and had ability to obtain it.

I wish they would have kept it, if only as a historical document. Publicizing it, though, would have upended the Church (and possibly other established religions) in ways we couldn't see.
