Delmer Daves estate

For those interested, Curtis Paul has dozens of Limited Editions Club books from the estate of director Delmer Daves, as well as more non-LEC books from the estate. I am not affiliated but have recently purchased some of these books. A book inscribed by Fletcher Martin, illustrator of Sea Wolf and Tales from the Gold Rush, is one listing with a connection to LEC.

Daves’ limitation number was 840. He did not appear to have written his name in the books, but he did in some of his non-LEC books.

Delmer Daves was a director of films like 3:10 to Yuma, Dark Passage and many more. He died in 1977 and his children have sold some of his estate in 2023.

Daves appears to have been well-regarded but I was not familiar until after noticing many listings were from limitation 840/1,500, I asked the seller who the previous owner was. It’s nice to know that the LEC had this among their subscribers. Daves may have been an original subscriber based on some of these listings from the early 1930’s.

Curtis Paul has been responsive and reasonable in communication during the sale. I have not received the book I purchased so can not comment on condition.

I bought a book from him a while back and recently a couple series prospectuses. Good seller, quick to provide additional photos and details when requested

The books arrived and they are in the condition the dealer described, or better. These books from the 30’s, like Daphnis and Chloe, Aucassin and Nicolete, The Golden Ass and The Voice of the City are absolutely stunning to see in person. Thanks to Django for his recommendations in this forum. Greatly appreciated.

It works best if you search with “840” as the keyword. The seller doesn’t refer to Delmer Daves in the listings, but Delmer Daves limitation number was 840. Currently there are about 50 LEC’s listed.

Thanks to all. At those prices the books had better be in great condition!

That’s a solid harvest! All books I don’t own but would like to based on a few years of LEC research.

>8 GusLogan: I think some time on the Fine Press forum has made me numb to LEC prices. Some of those newer fine press books are very expensive and the titles just don’t seem interesting.

But to fair to the seller, he clearly described the books. They appear as close to new as I can imagine for a 90 year old book. In particular the binding of The Golden Ass was a pleasant surprise. The monthly letter says, “This book is bound in the hide of an ass. It is actually made from the skin of a donkey colt, and finished in its natural tannage, without any staining and without any artificial graining. The resulting leather, which we suppose has never been used upon a book before, is creamy in color, is soft and sensual to the fingers, and pleasantly limp for binding around a book. We consider it entirely successful, and we would be the first to indicate our doubts if we didn't.”
