using "hold" creatively

Hello, I wasn't sure how to describe this in the subject line -- I'm new here and trying to organize a library at my church. We don't have much space right now, and I was considering asking parishioners to donate books to the collection but keep them in their houses, only bringing them if a patron placed the book on hold. Has anyone done this, and is it worth trying?
