The fire-filled eyes of the robed figure were what the girl in the opening chapter had also seen. The thing that killed Maurice Jennings must be the one who killed the young girl.
The thing seemed to be sniffing the air, I think he/it was on the scent of Nala, who had crept into the alleyway. Perhaps Maurice’s approach interfered with the thing’s senses? If so, Maurice paid the price with his life, but saved Nala in the process.

There was a figure who attacked Jennings in the alleyway probably the same figure who attacked Nala.
