Favorite Booksellers

Do you have favorite book stores or booksellers in your area? Not only online but in person?
There are still small private-owned bookshops where treasures can be found. It is often so much better to talk to a seller about their books in person instead of online communication.

You could check the list of recommended booksellers on the Fine Press Forum wiki at https://wiki.librarything.com/index.php/Groups:Fine_Press_Forum#Recommended_book...

>1 booksforreading: Living where I do, there ain't no such critter! Nearest antiquarian shop is a two-hour drive away in Missoula, Montana (Bird's Nest Books), but I haven't been there in years. Heck, they may not even be in business any more as the URL for their website re-directs to Wikipedia! Can't find a web presence more recent than 2017....

The Book Exchange (also in Missoula) is good for a surprise once in a while, but they're a huuuuge used/bargain book store.

And then there's Blacktail Mountain Books in Kalispell, Jim Handcock, prop. Always like to stop in here and chat with Jim whom I've known for 40 years. Heck of a used book store, always worth spending time browsing through. I've picked up some interesting treasures here in the past, including a pristine Ian Fleming 1st (Man With the Golden Gun) and other interesting things from time to time. Drop by and chat, then browse.

Sadly, there is no good antiquarian book store in my area any more.

Thank you! Sadly, that list is very incomplete, though it is still a good resource.

I have never been to Missoula, Montana, but it seems like a good place to visit - even if only for bookstores. :)

One of excellent and knowledgeable booksellers in my area is Michael Utt. He is a great person to talk to, very passionate about books, and he has an extensive collection of rare books in several areas, one of which is chess. He also has numerous rare first editions in fiction and historical explorations.
He has a good online presence, but I have never visited his website, because I always talk to him in person.

I will be in Norman, Oklahoma for a week next week. Any recommendations for a good bookstore/bookseller there?

For almost 8 years, I was my favorite bookseller, as I owned and ran Village Books in Ukiah, CA, the county seat of Mendocino County. When I retired, I sold the store to an enthusiastic young man, but then Covid killed the place.

In the Upper West Side (Manhattan) neighborhood my wife and I are about to move to, my favorite bookstore is Westsider Used and Rare Books. (https://www.librarything.com/venue/44416/Westsider-Used-and-Rare-Books). I haven't really met the owner yet, but the place is one of those marvelous small, crammed, bookstores with shelves up to the ceiling. So even though I haven't met this person, he'll soon be my favorite bookseller.

Westsider is also one of favorite bookstores in NYC, I also like their record / CD store, those are must stops for me, plus across the street from the bookstore is Zabar's a must stop for bagels.
