Brave New World by Aldous Huxley 2013

Brave New World was first published in 1932 as the Great Depression slowly came to an end. It depicts a totalitarian dystopia that raised moral questions about the way in which the planet was evolving. Set in London in the far future, it discusses integrity and society as well as science and manufacturing.

The world is peopled by mentally conditioned clones who support the state in a rigid and formulated way. It describes a perfect heaven which is actually hell. It is one of the classics of modern English literature.

Ursula K. Le Guin introduces this xxiii+197 page book which has eight brightly coloured illustrations by Finn Dean. It is bound in cream cambric grain paper, the cover printed with a design by Finn Dean. The endpapers are green and the red slipcase measures 24.7x16.8cm.

The Folio Society also published an edition of Brave New World in 1971 which had an aluminium foil cover, a black slipcase and drawings by Leonard Rosoman.

I’m one of those rare people who prefers the 1971 edition with the foil. Very cool. Adds to my reading experience immensely. (My copy has also stood the test of time)

The illustrations in the latest version are great though. Cover…meh.
